I picked up my new '14 C2 end of January 2015 for $16.3k (including dealer doc fees, but excluding sales tax and DMV fees). While I'm not a fan of buying new cars, I thought this was an acceptable deal so I pulled the trigger.

I just checked prices again, and they went down another $500. Guess I mis-timed my purchase by a month - could have saved ~$550. That's like a year's worth of gas!

Prices will always continue to fall as the model year gets older and older.

And prices will rise with the price of gas. Crappy weather is another sales incentive. The difference in price between December 2009 and January 2010 was greater.

But in the end it all doesn't matter. One does the best one can at the time. There will always be someone who paid less and someone who paid more. You got what you wanted and enjoyed an additional month of savings. There's no guarantee that same configuration will be sitting on the lot next month.

Like the sign says, "The car you looked at today and will buy tomorrow is the same car someone else looked at yesterday."

The small difference spread out over the life of the car is insignificant.

Kingnba: Right...it's a balancing act of waiting long enough as these become longer dated aged inventory (esp with the old generation), but not to the point where it's sold out.

Anyway, for whoever is interested in a '14C2 at that px, it's at Sansone Toyota in NJ. There may be better deals elsewhere, but when I purchased my C2, I checked around the NYC / NJ area and no one was able to beat their px. My experience with them was mixed...my salesperson was helpful (though at one point he mentioned that VIN etching is mandatory, which nearly prompted me to walk away from the deal), but there's issues with other depts. in the dealership - for instance, a friend of mine purchased the same exact car I bought last month (that same day...he fell in love with it when I let him test drive my car) and traded in another car with a lien on it. Took about a month for the dealership to mail out a check to payoff that lien...after 3 or more phone calls - each time they indicated they'd mail out the check to payoff the lien but didn't do so until the end.

I'm not one to count pennies when it comes to my car purchases / accessories, and I don't do so with my other cars. But for some reason, owning this Prius gives me the urge to try to save every last dollar spent on the car...probably because that's one of the selling points of the car - gas efficiency & low maintenance. It's even urging me to follow up with the dealer and request for a refund of unused DMV fees I paid at closing.

Overstated state fees are the oldest dealer scam. The defense is verifying the actual amounts from the state and changing their BS amounts on the contract.

Keep on them for the refund and feel free to make them uncomfortable when you bring up the topic on New Owner Night. DON'T submit the satisfaction survey until you have the refund and whatever else they owe you.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm actually just going to dispute this via my credit card deposit (which they already owe some other monies due to an overpayment) if they don't resolve by Monday. This will put the onus on them if they want their money. Shame it had to get to this point as I've spoken to my salesperson (got the typical "it'll get there in a week") and e-mailed multiple times.

Good move. No merchant wants a chargeback from a credit card. Getting even with the money due you is good. Getting ahead is better. You should be able to get something out of them for your inconvenience. The survey doesn't have a time limit so hold on to it until you are satisfied. Keep track of who was helpful and who wasn't.

I wouldn't expect much from the salesman. His interest in the transaction ended when you signed the contract. When there are problems one needs to speak with the Sales Manager or General Manager.
