To follow up and probably close this thread, I charged my battery overnight last weekend with a BatteryMINDer charger with an AGM setting.

After less than an hour at a charge voltage in the 14.7V range it switched to a float voltage of about 13.7V for the duration, indicating that the battery was almost fully charged when starting.

After sitting a couple of hours after removing the charger the battery was at 13.3V . The next morning it was at 13.1V. On Monday morning it was at 13.0V and Tuesday morning it was at 12.9V.

After driving my 26 mile one way commute to work for a week, this morning it tested at 12.8V. This is the same voltage it was prior to topping it off with the BatteryMINDer.

So it looks like 12.8V is about where the DC/DC Converter is going to maintain the voltage level of this battery. This gives me the baseline that I was looking for to know what voltage to monitor for a healthy battery. This is also the voltage level that the Owner's Manual lists as 100% SOC.

This seems to agree with others on here that have tested their fully charged batteries.

From what I've read, the code is VERY much a code. It's not that easily decipherable. If you contact Yuasa, they may get back to you with the date corresponding to the date.

I think the idea is so battery customers don't cherry-pick batteries by latest date.

I thought Patrick has verified the date code is DD/MM/YY.

Yeah ok, you very likely right, my bad. Just looking through my cell phone snaps:

We bought in Nov, 2010. The battery was toast, had to be replaced, by dealership. The battery they put in says 240210W. My only quibble: on page one of the thread you report having a code 240214W. That seems an odd coincidence, gets me wondering if this is actually a date code, or maybe just the last two numbers indicate the year, and the rest is battery model??

(see post #14 on page 1)

    Hi folks,

12V Battery code is S46B24R. YUASA (see pix)

What does this ' CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM' flash means? As per enclosure/pix. Car still runs but the gasoline engine is perpetually on . The flash came on last week .

    ODO reading is 119132km.
Car is fully serviced and maintained according to schedule . Original batteries are still in used. Nothing has been changed except the tyres and the air conditioning refrigerant recharge. The car is 4.5 years old . Driven as a personal car with a daily commute of about 60-100km.

Is the traction battery failing before the 12V battery ? .The toyota folks resetted the computer system without providing the error codes. Car operates as usual now but I don' t trust the dealer.

Kindly advise . Thanks in advance.

Will try changing the 12 V battery in the interim .

The battery model number is the S46B24R. The date code is the small label just above the lifting strap. 030210W.

The date code format is DD/MM/YY so your date code is February 03, 2010. These batteries have an expected life of about 4 - 5 years.

A low 12V battery will cause random messages such as you are seeing. Replacing the 12V battery will be the first recommendation when you first see random alarm lights and messages such as you are seeing. If you have a way to check the battery anything below about 12.5V after sitting overnight will indicate a low battery. A fully charged battery should read in the 12.8V range.

After replacing the 12V battery if you continue to get these messages you will need to have the dealer, or someone with a Prius specific code reader, read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and report back here for advice.

Thank you JDCollins , I will do that and revert .

At what approximate ODO readings does the traction battery fail ?

Fortunately we have not seen very many Gen 3 traction battery failures to date. Some taxis have gone in excess of 200,000 miles and still rolling.

Can't say. Not enough data to predict.
It might be as much a matter of time as it is mileage.

    All Batteries Great and Small?
    James Herriot would be proud.

I liked this post just for the sheer audacity and creative application of comparing charging a battery to birthing a calf.

So dead by the road today. My battery in my 2011 was a little less than 4 years old and was planning on swapping it out soon but my wife got stranded at Big Lots. It was so dead that I had to crawl through the car and unlock to back hatch to jump it.

Not a pleasant experience as even the locks did not work.

Off to the dealer in the morning with a trickle charge over night. Auto zone was out of stock and wanted $218

Thinking of doing the 2012 just to be safe.

124 and still driving on the wrong side of the road.

Thanks as I forgot/but I needed to inspect the battery first anyway

BTW $218 out the door at the parts dept and I installed it. 84 month MIJ Toyota battery and a perfect fit for everything including the vent hose.

Does any one know what the free exchange period is?

Where does the acid go/LOL I see the hose going out the floor but what does it drip on. Kind of concerned about corrosion.

The hose is for venting gasses. Unless you have a wreck the acid should stay inside the battery.

Strong acid smell when I replaced the battery

Checked the code on the 2012 that I just replaced

200312W Anyone know what that means? No way that is a 2003 battery.

The date code is DD/MM/YY so for yours is March 20, 2012.
