Red Triangle and brake light

    2005 Prius 190,000 miles....Red Triangle and brake light on panel....as soon as you park and try to restart it will not engage in drive or reverse....check for codes show nothing....the last time it happened i was able to use an obd2 device with an iphone to clear codes even though no codes were displayed and get the car home with out a tow... 12 volt aux battery shows ok thanks

    If it won't go to READY and shift into D I have found this to be the 12V in most cases. How did you check the auxiliary battery? It should have a manufacture date on the top of it and if it's more than 5 years old it may need to be replaced. Good luck.

    Make sure you test the battery after sitting for several hours to get an accurate reading.

    Does your shift lever/joystick bind up or make any clicking sounds when you move it?

    When the joy stick is functioning properly I can hear clicking sounds at the rear of the car back by the battery. Of course the start button is green and the display shows a "ready" readout next to the DNPB display. When it won't shift out of park or neutral the start button is Amber. The yellow top optima battery is suppose to last 10 years???

    Update: 2 blocks from work this morning the triangle and brake light appeared again... parked the car and shutdown....would not restart into ready mode...shift from park to neutral only...i have this obd2 wireless device that connects to my iphone with enginelink software.[​IMG]..it was unable to see any codes displayed but when i hit the clear codes button, everything returned to normal....i was able to drive home without a paying for a tow truck... if it was the 12 v battery why would it start after codes cleared? i have one of these ordered[​IMG] perhaps i need to use the mini vci and see what the codes are the next time it happens? what ever the codes are, i think are not letting the car proceed into ready mode.

    Mini vci shows many codes...start with this one P0AA6 Hybrid Battery voltage system isolation fault?

    you can't judge a 12 volt by it's warranty. a ten dollar meter, and you would know definitely.

    You will get better answers if you list all the codes:) The P0AA6 code means that somewhere high voltage is leaking into the car's frame. The leak could be in the battery, transmission, air conditioner compressor, hv cables, and others. In Techstream next the P0AA6 code there is an icon that looks like a snowflake. Clicking on the snowflake will bring you to the freeze frame data. There you will find the sub codes or information codes. The sub code will show where the leak is coming from.     First time with Techstream software version 9.30.002 , i remember seeing the snowflakes, would there be tutorial on techstream's use? is the health check function the best way to show all the codes? i will run the software again with mini-vci and repost all codes. thanks all.

    Well you dodged a bullet with that 612 sub code. The 526 sub code is generic to all HV leaks. The 612 sub code says it is your battery that is leaking. Now a bad battery is not a good thing but it is MUCH less bad than a bad transmission. If you decide to repair this yourself be aware that HV is getting out of the battery! That means that the case of the battery will have voltage present. Until all the buss bars are removed from one side of the battery just assume that anything can be live. The freeze frame data pages have titles on them. That at least puts some words to the other codes. It is common for "phantom codes" to clear once the real cause is repaired. The B1421 code means the sunlight sensor for the air conditioner was in the shade. Google is good for general info on codes.

    Google is ok for general info on codes ... for some codes you'll find a lot of stuff, and some of it will be right, but it's not always easy to tell which. Some of it was put up by other people who also didn't look in the manual but put their guesses on the internet where Google finds them for you. The one place you should always know you can look for the definitive meanings of all those codes when you want it is on techinfo.toyota.com in the service manual for your model year Prius. (Then you can more easily tell apart the Google sources that are on the money and the ones that aren't.)
