My HV battery died yesterday....moment of silence....rest in peace.
I will probably buy a new battery from the dealership, but they said they only warranty it for 1 year. Does the sound correct?

yes. but since it is new, it is likely to last much longer than anything else out there. the question is, are you expecting to keep the car for as many miles as you got out of your first battery, or will it be worth it to have the newer battery when you trade or sell, or are you better off with a used or rebuilt?

Yes, I plan to keep the car and am happy that I may experience another 100K miles from this new one.

Sounds like your car has fairly low mileage. You should check to see if there's still a warranty left on the HV battery. If not, you can always call Toyota for a Goodwill Warranty and hopefully they'll cover a good portion of the replacement cost.

Given that when you buy a new Prius, Toyota warranties the HV battery for at least 8 years, it is disappointing that if you need to buy a new one in 9 years the warranty on the new one is only 1 year.

But that does seem to be the case.

The prevailing wisdom in the matter seeming to be the idea that if you have a "new" battery installed and it works for 1 year? It's probably going to work for at least 7 more.

I still wish, Toyota warrantied their replacement batteries for a longer period of time. But I don't know how much of their policy or philosophy in this matter is to try and encourage someone to buy a new vehicle, instead of a new battery.

The general Toyota parts warranty is for one year duration, unlimited miles. The engine in a new car is covered under the 5 year, 60K mile power train warranty. If you are silly (compare the price of a new engine in the multi-thousand dollar range to the price of a used engine for $400 or so) enough to buy a new replacement engine from the Toyota parts counter it will be covered by a one year warranty. No difference in policy there.

It seems likely that part of the reason is to encourage new vehicle sales, that is the main reason for an auto manufacturer's existence after all...

Manufacturers are ranked on new vehicle unit sales, that gets substantial business press attention. No one cares how much spare parts sales volume a manufacturer does.

My 2005 Prius threw up the red triangle of death (along with every other light on the panel), and the dealer wanted $3,500 to replace the HV battery. The Hybrid Automotive grid charger cost less than $450 and, with around two hours of trouble-free installation, has fixed the battery and removed all the warning lights. I know it's not a permanent fix, but it gives me time to raise the $1,400 I'll need for a new battery to install.

I'm not particularly surprised that Toyota will only warranty a new Hybrid Battery replacement for one year. But as a hybrid owner that may someday face the decision of what to do once the original hybrid battery fails, I'm just disappointed that the warranty isn't longer.

I think if Toyota would back the "new" hybrid battery replacement with a substantial warranty...then for me the decision would be easy. Buy an OEM battery from Toyota.

Since OEM is the most expensive of all the HV battery replacement options, and since Toyota will only back them for 1 year, that's when looking at refurbished or re-manufactured batteries from 3rd party options becomes more attractive.

Anyway, my hope is that I'm many years away from having to face this reality. I bought and registered new in a CARB state, so it's not a direct concern to me immediately.

But the older I get, the faster years seem to pass. If I end up keeping the Prius as a "long time" commitment? Eventually I'll face a decision.

In a CARB state, I guess what you are hoping for, is 9 years of use, and a failure right before the warranty expires. But no guarantee that I would get that lucky.

I bought the car used (a 2006) and put approx. 37k miles on it. it is paid off. It now has 102K and of course, the battery is dead. I like the car, it gets great gas mileage (and it will be even better with a new battery). I have researched the reconditioned batteries, but in my situation (I need the car no matter what, every day) I will pull the trigger soon and opt for the new battery from the dealership. $2900 installed I believe. I trust the dealer and also have faith knowing that they are available if something goes bad in the next year. I look at in the aspect that I may be getting another 80-100K miles for 3000.00, or this could all be a pipe dream after a year......

Have you tried asking toyota corporate to cover this replacement? You'll be surprise it may end up being much less than $2900 if you ask

JC91006, I have thought about asking them. What grounds do I stand on to ask? Should I ask corporate or the owner of the dealership?

Everyday this advice is given out. You can call the corporate office directly and ask. You just tell them your car is just out of warranty and you would like to get a "goodwill" warranty to cover the replacement cost of the battery. That's all you need to say....They'll take over from there with their own questions to you.

Let us know how it goes. I have a 2006 Package #9 with 158k miles and the only thing I have a problem with is the headlights. No battery problems and I tow with it.

    Yep..
Let us know how it goes with both an attempt to get a goodwill coverage on your battery replacement, and once you get the battery, how the replacement experience goes.

    Good Luck.

The Hybrid Automotive grid charger fixed the battery for about a week and a half; long enough to get my emissions checked, fortunately. But the 10-year-old battery finally could go no more. I watched a YouTube video and installed a Dorman battery from NAPA that cost $1,300 and the old car's back in action.
