What about approaching your insurer, getting a damage assessment, and then depending on the outcome of that assessment, opting to follow through or back out? Does the latter still raise your rates? If so, seems like heaven for the insurers: everyone intimidated to not even consider using their insurance.

There is no backing out. Here in the states, or at least California, laws are designed to squeeze maximum profits for the corporations, citizens are viewed as nothing but consumers who consume for the benefit of corporations. Of course the USA is a heaven for corporations like auto insurance companies.

You either file a claim or you don't, there's no middle option.

I will be taking my sad Prius to a trusted mechanic tomorrow or Tuesday. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice.

What you're saying jives with what I've heard from a lot of US members. Guess that's ONE thing we do better up here. ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) will even counsel you to get it assessed ( through a myriad of bodyshops authorized by ICBC), and then decide if you want to use insurance or go it alone. They'll also let you know what'll happen to your rates, helps immeasurably in making the decision. And the authorized body shops make it a one-stop process.

a decent body shop will give you a free estimate. used to be you wanted to get 3 estimates before you even approach the insurance company.
