Apologies if this has been discussed before. I did a search for this question and didn't see anything...

Anyway, just wondering if there's a setting on the Prius (I have the 2010 model IV) where the car will lock itself if you have walked away from it for a certain amount of time and forgot to lock it initially. Again, apologies if this has been discussed before!

    Thanks.

Not that I've heard of. In fact, I've never heard of that feature on any car--have you?

I believe you can have it set to relock automatically, a certain period after unlocking, if a door wasn't opened.

Mine will relock if I unlock the doors and don't open them within 1 minute. Other than that I know of nothing that locks it automatically.

I had this feature on my 4Runner (Cash4Clunkers may it rest in peace). It was a function of the Clifford alarm I had installed when I first got it. The first year I locked myself out twice at gas stations. Luckily I was close to home. After that and for the next 14 years I was very careful to always put the keys in my pocket when getting out of the car.

I once owned a Hyundai with a Clifford alarm system that did that.
It was kind of dangerous so I disabled that feature. It was simple to do - no garage or machanic needed just read the manual and followed the instuctions.:);).

I'm with you 100% on this feature and it should also include auto locking when the vehicle speed exceeds 10mph like Mercs.
I tried to lock my Prius III Gen and had left my key in the cup holder .... doooh. The car reminded me with a Beeeeep that I had left the key inside the cabin and hence would not lock..now thats clever. So if its so clever why can't it lock automatically when it knows the keys moved out of range of the car

Mine has done this too. (I havent seen a preference setting for it though)

It doesnt do it everytime though, only after I have been driving and park and get out and walk away (with the key fob of course).

Not sure about the UK, but in the US, you can have it set so the doors auto lock at a certain speed, or when put into drive (and unlock when put into park). Check your owners manual--the US manual has an entire chapter for dealer adjustable features.

You could probably do this on your own using an after market trained monkey. That would work better with leather seats, which are more resistant to monkey feces and urine. You could fill the small door storage areas with Purina Monkey Chow.

The door lock/unlock customizable feature can be set by the dealer as stream mentioned or you can change it yourself, owner's manual page 69. The procedure is a little tricky and you have to follow it to the letter, the monkey won't be able to do it :), but it does work.
