    Hello Everyone

    I have a Prius 2010, 4 years old with 144.000 km.

The last 3 night we had temp. below freezing point. So every time i started my Prius up at the morning, the engine starts to shake violent, and then automatically shut off the engine with a message on the screen "Check Hybrid System".. so after several times i restart the car, it runs normally, still with the message on. The temperature outside was -1 degree Celsius.

So i used my OBD to pick up the codes, which says P3191 - Unknown Error. What does this error mean at what could cause this problem?

    Thanks

Btw. I recently had a Oil Change. I dont know if it could be the cause of it?

    P3191 :

    - Engine does not Start -
    - Out of fuel
    - Engine coolant temperature sensor
    - Crankshaft position sensor
    - Camshaft position sensor
    - EGR valve assembly
    - ECM

Check your oil level. If it is over the top fill mark it can cause issues.

Christian_cool, I wonder if this is related to your previous egr clogging issues. You're probably thinking the same?

Another known issue with the violent engine shaking, in cold weather; is if you start the car, move it a short distance and then turn it off before it completes the warm-up cycle. After sitting overnight and cold soak, it can exhibit the shaking that you indicate.

The next time this shaking happens try flooring the accelerator and see if the shaking stops.

have you taken it in for the intake manifold campaign?

Yes i am wondering it could be something related to the EGR valve or the Manifold, that i would have a look on tomorrow:)

I have check the Oil, the level is just a littlhe 'Max ' leve before tel, but i am considering if it could have something to do with the oil type to? its a 'Shell Helix Ultra 5W- 30 ' ?

The recommended oil per Toyota is the 0W20 which is full synthetic. Even though the 5W30 is not the recommended oil weight I would not think it would cause your problems.

I would try to drain a little oil to get it below MAX level. I know on the Gen II this would cause carry-over issues and I would not think it would be any different for your Gen III.

Could be heavier oils are spec'd in Germany? Again, likely doesn't matter.

Can you elaborate on the campaign?

It seems like Toyota has abandoned the upgrade.

Mine does this in the mornings... the dealer acknowledges that this is often caused by carbon build up in the intake manifold ports. However the Toyota database does not flag either of my vehicles as needing the new manifold.

I took mine to the dealer for the power management re-flash and demonstrated the knocking on startup in the morning.

Since both are 2010 and neither have had the upgrade I don't understand why they would not qualify... confusing at best.

The dealers are installing intake manifolds for paying customers problems... they are happy to quote $$$ for a new manifold to fix the knocking problem. The question is... will the new manifold be a long term solution?

When you remove the intake manifold you will find tons of gummy carbon blocking the EGR path to the intake and quite a bit of heavy gum/oil substance in and under the throttle body cavity. This blockage is a definite cause of the knocking.

Cleaning or replacing the intake manifold will at least temporary solve the problem.

How did you determine that's the cause? Is it caused or aggravated by overfilling the engine with oil?

Yesterday i cleaned up my manifold (done it lot of times) and as usual i find alot! Of these carbon build up and i clean it, and of course the EGR was the worst mess ive seen every time. So this just means that there is a design faulth in the manifold. And long time ago i asjed if my dealer/ toyota could cover a replacement. They said no! I have to pay it myself if i want to replace it with an updated version. But I didn't do it since I don't want to pay for their faulths. So thats why i offen clean the manifold and see improvements in performance and fuel consumption.

I can point out in my case everytime i had issue with roughly engine running. The problem was solved everytime i clean up the manifold

Could the cause be the type/kind of gasoline you are using?

Christian had thread on this some time back. It prompted me to have a look at ours. With only around 40,000 km's I found some build-up, black tarry stuff. The main thing I dealt with is the connector pipe between EGR and intake manifold. Then tried (as far as I could reach) to clear out the manifold and EGR ends of the connection pipe.

I see there's a code for blockage in this circuit: P0401

The cause and effect was like night and day (as others have mentioned). Before the cleaning... intermittent knocking which eventfully lead to a reoccurring P0304 code and shuddering under certain loads. It's also what a Toyota mechanic (not the front line customer server reps) told me when I demonstrated the problem and talked to them recently.

At this point I'm not certain of the root cause... but many think its a design problem. Don't think overfilling of the engine oil is a part of this issue.

The second 2010 Prius I did also had blockage in the tube that connects the throttle body into the engine block. It was full of a light colored heavy weight oily substance (like mixing engine oil with honey). Enclosed are some pictures... Prius.2 Gue.jpg is tube that goes to the engine block the others should be obvious.

The picture Prius.2 Oil Concentrate under Throttle Body.png shows the oily substance in the intake manifold (under the throttle body). The picture was taken as I was shifting the throttle body around... the stuff was flowing backinto the main body of the intake manifold.

Just bumping a thread. Christian-cool reported on clogged intake in an earlier thread too, one of the first reports?
