And it was one of the first to offer climate control, SKS and power driver's seat in Canada. (Then the Mazda3 stormed past with more tech lol)

yes, all the easy stuff is done. I just don't see them doing a downsized turbo engine, or a lot of aluminum or carbon fiber in the corolla. The focus is doing the first part (1L ecoboost) but it seems like the corolla mix is "good enough'
They have a new cvt for the eco version. That is the one I don't think they will improve greatly on. IMHO low power like the prius and corolla have best efficiency, feel, and acceration with a cvt, whether electronic like the prius or not. For higher power a 6+ speed automatic an prodvide the best ballance. Might as well push corolla automatic drivers to cvt.

I also didn't see them doing downsizing turbo, until...
    1.2T Engine

Early this month, at Geneva. Auris shares Corolla platform.

yep I stand corrected. I am surprised that they are putting this engine in a auris, but it will help them get lower l/100km on the tests. Still economically it doesn't make much sense to me, but ford did it on the focus and that seems to sell in europe.

I have never been a fan of down sizing bellow 1.5 L gasoline (smaller may work for the different diesel cycle). Savings in fuel economy seem to mainly test related and not real world, unless the driver really concentrates. When you downsize and turbo charge, you mainly add cost and complexity for better performance in the test. The problem is that turbos get thirstier at their high power settings, and if you are going that small drivers use high power more often. If you do a wide valving trick on a 1.5 L as toyota has done in their 1.8L for the US corolla eco, you can run it in an efficient atkinson mode at low power settings. The only real world advantage with say the 1L ecoboost over a di wide valved normally aspirated 1.5l is faster start up, and lower start up inefficiency for short trips.

The fiesta is a better fit, as a fiesta drivers might be more likely to stay out of the power zones that are inefficient in a turbo, or maybe not.
