interesting story. i was told once that the recommended service intervals assume the owners can skip one service in error and it should not impact the operation.

Really? $9.99 out the door for a full synthetic oil and filter change?? Thats almost unbelievable as a quart of synthetic costs just about that much… Unless thats what you meant, $9.99 a quart..

^ I had similar reaction, but then figured his dad was the Service Manager, or he had to promise them his soul. ;)

The dealer "gives" a number of "gingerbread" so they will get the majority of sales
9.95 synthetic oil and filter , lifetime on the big battery , life time on power train
But seldom will budge off list sticker price

Oh I see. The $9.99 is not for anybody that walks in off the street, you had to have bought the car there and it's Kinda like what Toyota/scion did years ago with what they called the Gold ring club I guess.

We had the gold ring club on our old 2005 scion and that included lifetime oil chanes for free up to twice a year. I'm pretty sure we paid a little for it up front but I think I recall it was minimal and paid for itself after a couple oil changes.

Bingee3, as a fellow Michigander, what dealership are you talking about?

I would do unspeakable lewd and lascivious things for a $9.99 synthetic oil change at my dealer!!

Yeah, I read that up above. No dealer around here (Macomb) has that kind of deal that I know of, because I would've went there instead of Suburban Toyota, where their motto is "Before you sign on the dotted line we love you and will spoil you with compliments. After you sign, we could care less if you spontaneously combust - and dont come back for a fire extinguisher, because you have given us your money and now we dont give a shit about you."

I have searched high and low trying to find a reasonably priced (<$10) 'high mileage' filter. I have used Mobil 1's filter a few times and Bosch's regular 3313 filter. The thinking on this thread seems to be that, even though the filters are so small, they still should never fill up/ cause bypass at 10k (and even oops I forgot 12-13k) oil change intervals. I always use Mobil 1 0W-20 15k extended (gold label) full synthetic oil.
    ($5 qrt jug at Walmart for $29 + tax :) )

Can't find PurolatorOne (10k) or Wix High mile p/n for Prius. Bosch L3313 is currently $24 on Amazon prime. :O

Anyone recommend high quality high mileage filter that can be gotten for under $10, heck for under $14. ;) I've read several horror stories of Fram's hit/miss quality w/ filter element not bonding and allowing bypass from day one.

And what is this Fumoto engine oil drain valve someone mentioned? Is it a lot easier than pulling the plug, save time and works very well? No clearance issues?

ANY oil filter will handle 10,000 mile change intervals.

I use AMSOIL, and for the longest time, they claimed you could go 1 year/100K on an oil change. They did recommend replacing the filter and topping off the oil after 6 months. So, clearly a filter will work for 50K with no problems (unless you have a lot of contamination in your oil sump).

Indeed, because the product used engine heat to clean gunk out of the motor, they recommended a short interval for the first use because more junk would flush into the filter if you were running dino oil for a long time.

    Don't worry about it. ;)

The Toyota TRD oil filter for the Prius runs ~$14, and although it appears to be a bit sturdier (metal end caps?), I couldn't say if it was designed for high-mileage vehicles.

I am commenting a little late to the party.

Blackstone analysis is the absolute guide for each individual car.
Vehicle location makes a difference too...cold, heat, humidity, salt air etc.
    All else is speculation.

Why the OP states the oil change is more difficult is unknown?
Special oil wrench is required for ease and then there are the access/plastic failing panels that could be considered in the way.
Car can be low to the ground so jacking/ ramps to raise the car makes the job easier too.
I could agreed that the Prius oil change is more difficult that a full size Chevy truck oil change, but easier than a Corvette.
So not sure on why there was that comment.

IMO...typically, synthetic oil can go two years without breakdown or acid or moisture, yet yearly changes are recommended to reduce the acid and moisture accumulation.
Again Blackstone to confirm any plan in regards to extending maintenance recommendations.

FWIW...I had friends over the years who ran expensive Redline Oil and changed filter only at 7500 and then oil and filter at 15000 to save money. They never had any issues.
