Chinese battery electric crossover: BYD e6 test drive, Los Angeles, May 2012

The BYD e6 wagon is the battery-electric car[IMG] that never quite made it onto the U.S. market.

Despite various plans and announcements over the last five years, the e6 was never offered for retail sale in North America.

Very quietly, that's now changing; the company hopes to lease around 200 BYD e6 electric cars[IMG] for use by UberX drivers in Chicago.
    ...

This is interesting. Now if they could just show up at Harbor Freight.

The all electric BYD e6 uses a really huge and heavy Li-POFE battery system to extend its range over 200 miles on a single charge. It's extended range battery makes it heavier, more expensive, and likely less energy efficient than short distance commuters like the Nissan Leaf. BYD's main claim to fame and core business has been battery packs -- Li-POFE battery manufacturing has been one of BYD's area of expertise. My expectation is that BYD e6's battery-motor system should a be flawless. However, BYD only entered the Car market about 10 years ago by an acquisition of a second tier Chinese car company -so the design and Quality assurance of the car -(for example the passenger cabin or the suspension) itself might be fall short of international expectations. Early reports that I've read seem to suggest this maybe the case for the BYD e6. Early on BYD received financial backing from Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hawthway to expand their auto sales to the USA, However, establishing a BYD dealership network in the USA has been elusive for BYD since they lack a major bank to finance the dealerships and provide consumer loans for the buyers. Hence BYD has shift their marketing focus on fleet sales ... e.g. taxi companies, local government fleet cars, and so forth.

The quality of their electric bus was a step or two below what was expected from an American bus. I suspect Fiat-Chrysler would welcome their entry into the US market as there would be a new cellar dweller when it comes to quality.

For now the main market for Chinese electric buses is the Chinese government. ...The secondary market for Chinese electric buses will likely be developing countries that China's Development Bank has extended credit to. China's Development Bank finances import/export deals between China and developing countries like Sudan.

fyi... China has declared a new economic policy that is being called the "new norm" in which China's Central banks cut back money for real estate development (to prevent a real estate bubble from bursting) and at the same time increase money for major public infrastructure projects ... the two that get tossed around frequently are urban area electric bus fleets and hi speed trains.
