I'm retired, so I don't a lot of long distance driving or
regular commuting anymore. Since I purchased my Prius
in late February, I have filled it just three times, averaging
about 8 gallons per fill, 420ish miles per tank. In other
words, I do a fillup about every 3.5 weeks (I excluded
time I was away on vacation).

On my last fillup a week ago, I tried to push it to
500 miles, by waiting until the last pip started to blink.
I got 482 miles before the last pip went into blinky
mode. Filled it up with 8.5 gallons.

I know that people say you can squeeze a gallon or
two more beyond when the gas nozzle clicks off, but
that doesn't work for me. If I try to add more, the
    nozzle clicks off almost immediately.

Does the owners manual for the 2010 Prius state only fill to the first click of the pump and not to the neck?

Also how would the canister get filled up with gas. Is there a direct liquid line to the canister or just a vapor line? Also where is the canister as opposed to the fuel tank?

I am just confused how this canister fills up with gas and has anyone with a 2010 Prius had this happened? Also I have filled up my 2003 Jetta TDI to the top of the neck all the time and nothing ever happened after 130,000 miles.

Please note I have only filled it to the brim maybe 6 times since we bought the car as in Oregon you are strictly forbidden to pump your own gasoline into your car.

Filling to the brim was the 100% accurate way to ascertain the exact MPG from a scientific point.

The owners manual states the tank capacity is 11.9 gallons is that filled to the brim or to the first click at the gas pump shut off?

there is a vapor recovery filter that prevents gas from venting to the atmosphere. the tube that vents the vapors exits at the top of the filler tube. should u fill up the tank so full that it makes it up to that hole. gas enters the tube getting the filter wet.

Dave, thanks for your reply. But would gas also get in that vent pipe when you are filling the tank or is it located so it is above the end of the gas nozzel point.

good question, but if the vent tube had any kind of curl on it, back pressure from the one way filter sitting below would prevent anything from getting in there. the vent; i am guessing, would be much smaller in diameter than the filler tube making any slosh very unlikely

I go only 500-550 klm (310-340miles) but so far have never let it go below 2 bars.
Usually but in 8.5-9 gallons never more than 9.3

Got an answer that will likely win the length of time between fill-ups. My father bought a Prius just after Christmas. Over the winter he used the car very little and this weekend I was visiting and asked him how he liked the car. He had yet to fill up and still had about 1/3 of a tank left. So - in about 4.5 months he had never filled up.

For me in my 2009 I fill up about once a week whether or not I really need it - my daughter has skating lessons and on the way I pass the lest expensive gas stations in the area - they are typically 10-cents or more less than most so I'll fill up if I have time and are under half a tank. I'm sort of conditioned to fill up at half a tank - my first car was an old Volvo with a bad fuel pump - it was fine over half a tank, but would buck like a horse if it went below - for years it was ingrained in me that 1/2 a tank was time to stop - these days I can get to about 1/4 a tank before that instinct kicks in.

This is my last 5 fill ups. I fill up with about 10 gallons of gas each time.

About once every 3 months. I drive 7 days a week, and average 99.9 mpg consistently. Longest was 14 months without a fill up. And you should see the size of the fish I caught last week!

My commute is 63 miles everyday to work. With the stock 15" wheels, I was able to get 625 miles or about 68 MPG e easily. Now that I upgraded the wheels to 17", my miles went down. Now its about 530 miles in a full tank :(

I fill up my Persona every 2 weeks give or take a day. My commute is 37 miles total a day plus wherever else I decide to drive to. I recently switched to a 4 day work week with longer hrs so that kinda helps lower total miles driven which is nice. Also with the weather breaking I'll probably be riding my motorcycle into work more often which does not save at all in the gas dept but oh well its a whole lot more fun.

I have the 17" rims that with the touring package. I've gotten has high as 1000km with 42L of gas (measured not calculated) that didn't involve much highway driving though or stop and go traffic. I was mostly driving on rural roads in the summer. Usually in the summer I get about 900-950km for 42L. In the winter, I see a drop down to 700km-750km for 42L. My guess is that it's colder, it's not your tires.

But the weight does matter. The stock 15" weigh about 34lbs with tires. The 17" with tires weigh about 46lbs. Weight is a factor and so is the temperature.

Here's a question. I have a 2011 with the *rigid* gas tank, which is supposed to hold 11.9 gallons. and not be subject to shrinking or expanding like the previous "bladders" of the gen 2 type. Today I filled my tank just as the display indicated that I had 39 miles remaining. My consumption showed that I was getting 46.5 mpg, and had traveled 417 miles. I was surprised when the tank took only 9.6 gallons. That's all I could squeeze in. So if the tank holds just a hair under 12 gallons, and the MFD indicated only 39 miles remaining, how could this be? That would be less than a gallon remaining, so the tank should have taken just over 11 gallons. Also, if I used 9.6 gallons, and drove 417 miles, that translates to only 43.4 mpg, not the 46.5 indicated on the display. What's the deal?
