Prius v HSI. Pls explain it to me (p&g / regen) as compared to a Gen 3 Liftback.

    I picked up a New 2014 prius v three for my wife a few days ago and noticed that the HSI is vertical with pip's and not horizontal and constantly moving with out the pip lines as it does in the Liftbacks.

    We have owned a 2013 Gen 3 Liftback in the past and I currently own a 2015 persona. I am pretty good at P&G and braking with finess and staying in the regen section of the HSI in the lift back and use the HSI constantly. I have watched Mr. Nagy's Youtube videos and practice P&G when I can. Couldn't find any vids on driving techniques for driving a v though.


    So my questions are...

    1-To P&G or to just glide in a v, does the HSI have to be displaying only one green pip (or how many) over the CHG section and at what pip line does it stop gliding and does ev take over? On the Liftback I know you just have to keep it at or to the left of the little triangle, as little showing as possible and your gliding.

    2-Regen braking! Does the v only allow regen on the first 2 white CHG pips on the HSI? If you light up the 3rd pip on the very bottom that would mean the traditional brakes are kicking in correct? If this is the case and regen only works when on the first 2 CHG pips I am finding it a little tough to stay in the regen area as its such a small window compared to the Liftback that has almost an inch of horizontal graph space to stay in regen before the regular brakes kick in..

    Final question, slightly off topic.

    Is there an option to display the 5 min interval mpg on the info screen as can be done on the liftback? What about the Post trip display after shutting the car off which shows up on the dash that shows MPG for that trip, time traveled, and distance? I really like that feature on the liftback.

    All the HSI info is explained pretty well in the manual.

    There are 3 bars for regen braking. If you continue pressing on the brake after the 3rd bar lights it adds friction braking.
    That big white "EV" light tells you its in EV mode. It will remain in EV as long as you don't go past the 50% mark on the throttle. If you have a full battery indicated, the system lets you go a bit past the 50% mark. If you want to glide resistance free with no charge or discharge, no bars should be lit.

    1. I would consider one green pip as the equivalent of the small triangle on the Prius.

    2. I think you're ok as long as you brake just until the 3rd CHG pip lights up. I'm sure there's a bit of lee way but as long as you don't continue pushing the brake pedal after the 3rd pip lights up, you should be ok.


    Can't answer the last one since it's been a while since I drove a Prius v.

    I have watched the friction brakes engage (on my ScanGuage II) and it happens after the third white bar lights up and you press the brake a little more. It looked to me like each white bar represented %33 of current vehicle calculated (based on ambient/battery temps & state of charge I'm guessing) regen capacity. So, when the third bar lights up you are at %67 of regen capacity and you can press the brake pedal more to get to %100 regen capacity and thereafter the friction brakes are blended in to stop the vehicle as directed by the driver.

    I just find it silly that Toyota would make the HSI not linear like on the liftback which I find makes controlling P&G and Regen so much easier. The little darn pip's are weird.:confused:

    If I am understanding correctly once you are lightly braking in the CHG regen section you CAN still be in regen while the CHG's 3rd pip is lit up…. But this is so silly as there is no way for you to know if you went past that 3rd pip point and are in normal brake territory??… Now I know it was mentioned to stop at 3 pips aka all lit up and not press the pedal any harder to stay in regen but the linear fashion on my lift back lets you know if you are all the way OR just about to hit regular braking territory..

    Can consumption and fuel savings be setup on the v as on the lift back from the settings menu? If I keep pushing display and hold it down when SET appears, SET flashes but I can't figure out how or what SET does…


    Oh and this morning I pumped the tires on the wife's v up to 40f/38r for her……..by hand with my bicycle pump…that was a mini workout. lol!

    Totally agree, it looks like cutesy won, over practicality. The guys that "fixed" the HSI display are probably working on the front grill of the 4th gen hatchback as we speak.

    I am Happy we bought a 2014 v, I cant stand the 2015 big black whale mouth grill… It just looks out of place..

    It's not actually a linear thing, since regen output is dependent on vehicle speed. At 60mph it takes only a light touch on the brake to make 3 bars, while at 20mph it takes a lot. I don't find it especially difficult to use it, perhaps there's a learning curve.

    You HAVE read the manual, yes?

    Or a low-resolution, low-cost display won over a more informative, higher resolution display like the hatchback's HSI. The similarly low-resolution fuel level and mpg gauges are irksome, too.

    Interesting!! So the 3rd CHG pip getting lit up and not pressing the pedal any more only produces 67% regen?? wow! It is in essence a guessing game to get from 67% to 100% regen depending on how hard you brake..

    It would be so much easier if it was pip (less) and the CHG area was slightly larger (like the liftback) OR keep the silly pips but make 5 pip's and each representing 20%?

    I mean I want as much efficiency as possible as does the next person so why did they make it harder to use…weird!:mad: The easier it is to brake in regen equals less brake pad wear, and produces more EV ability...(y)

    You can most definatly drive the car that way, but some (me included) like to attempt to acchieve the very best mpg all while reducing wear on the brakes… hence my original question. :)

    In an ideal situation, I find best mpg figures are achieved by not braking at all if possible, reading the road further ahead, gradually slowing down and trying not to stop at all, so I try not to look at the amount of regen I'm getting and let it look after itself. Stop start driving, constantly braking and accelerating, uses more fuel than just coasting along, but of course this is unavoidable in the real world due to consideration for other motorist and traffic conditions.
    Another economy tip, if you are stood in traffic, put the car energy display on, you will notice that if you have your foot lightly on the brake there is still energy being taken from the HV battery, which will need to use the ICE to recharge, press the brake a little harder and and the flow stops, saving energy.
