It seems to be a global thing: this happened near Sydney last week.

how do we know if she was drunk? to me it looked like sleepwalking or drugs (or both, a family member had a bizarre sleepwalking event while on Ambient).

Never mind, i watched the whole story with the empty vodka bottle inside.

 

My wife still likes to remind me of the time she woke up to a tinkling noise and found me urinating on the bedroom window. "What are you doing?" she asked. "I'm having a p--s," I said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. I have no recollection of this at all: I was fast asleep.

 

i seem to recall tony larussa (former baseball manager) passing out behind the wheel, at a red light in st louis a few years back.

 

Drinking and driving...no excuse! She obviously doesn't care about herself so neither do I. Lucky no one else was injured or killed.

 

What are the penalties for drunk driving in the US and/or CA?

Here a minimum is a 12 month driving ban, a large fine and at least 100% loading on your insurance - assuming you can get some. Oh and it's a criminal offence. If you're drunk rather than just over the limit then expect a 24 or 36 month ban, a larger fine and finding it almost impossible to obtain full insurance later.

Since the harsh penalties were introduced the rates of drunk driving reduced. Sure they're still happening, but it certainly makes people think and plan ahead. Do I pay a £20/$30 taxi ride or risk losing my mobility, my job, future travel and career prospects?

If the penalties for drunk driving are minimal - 3 month ban and a small fine, then the problem won't ever go away.

I know it starts at 6 month ban for the first offense in NJ. At least that is what the guy before a friend got. The friend got caught without insurance, and got a 12 month ban for that.

 

Well, good resolution to a very dangerous situation.
Her life was saved, as well as the risk to others driving on that highway that night. Could of been a real tragedy.

We do have penalties for driving under the influence in the USA. They vary from State to State, but can be anything and everything from severe fines to licence revocation and jail time.

My brother was hit by a drunk driver and suffered some severe injury (he's OK now). But his experience was that this guy was driving without a licence, which had already been revoked, and without insurance.

You can't get blood from a stone, so unless it's jail time, often any penalties enforced become useless. If someone is going to drive intoxicated, they probably aren't going to care whether they have a licence or insurance.

My brother spent about a month in the hospital, permanently screwed up his back and basically NOTHING happened to the drunk driver who was already NOT suppose to be driving.

 

legislators are afraid it might be them someday. install ignition lockouts, problem solved.

 

agree, lots of people driving with revoked license and no insurance. my wife's car was totaled like that. the perp turned to be her coworker. it least she lost her job.

 

So they think "I've nothing to lose by having no licence or insurance, so why not?"? We get that here but there is a back up injury scheme to assist if you're injured by an uninsured driver, whilst your own insurance covers your car and basic medical. If I recall, way back in the 1920's there were problems with people getting injured by uninsured drivers, so they made insurance mandatory but because that would benefit the insurers they insisted on a backup pot of money for the twats who do drive uninsured. I have uninsured and underinsured coverage on my plan. Can't say if it is mandatory.

We have uninsured driver cover, but it's pretty much basic to ensure your car is repaired and your insurance not loaded because of the claim involving an uninsured driver. You might get small medical or dentistry coverage.

 

do you have 'illegal immigrant coverage'? no license, no registration, no insurance, no worries?
