When slowing to a stop and turning to the right, there is a ticking sound (not loud) coming from the front. The ticking rate slows as the wheel slows and continues until almost stopped. Break pedal pressure does not affect the sound. The dealer tech heard the sound on a demo drive but they had no clue what it was and found nothing wrong. The tech, sitting in the right seat thought the sound was coming from the left side. I hear it coming from the right side. Maybe that means it comes from the middle? I only hear it when coming to a stop. Maybe road noise covers it up at higher speed but I don't know.

    Suggestions?

    Currently at about 38,000 miles.

Hi Larry. We have a few nice threads on this subject already. Do a search and you will find them with ease.

Maybe, maybe not. The Search function has been suffering serious impairments for a couple months. Until it is fixed, searching will often be fruitless, so it will be more helpful to point to an actual thread (if you can find it at all) or give a more detailed response.

I usually do searches but I can't see a search function. Maybe because I did this on an iPad? I'll try using my trusty WinXP system to see if it has a search function.

Surprise! On WinXP Firefox a search field is present but not on iPad with Safari. Grrrrrr........

In any case I read a bunch of the complaints and they are almost all exactly what I'm experiencing. I should have also mentioned that it's worse (louder) if I'm going down hill while breaking and turning right. Others mentioned this. The ticking has been going on for about a year and may be a bit louder than when it first started.

I couldn't find a guaranteed solution - someone had an axle replaced and that worked?

The ticking is not a real bother but it makes me worry that it could turn into something bad. I recently took a 2400 mile trip and expect to do two more this year (about 1900 miles and 1200 miles).

I'll try the downhill, right turn breaking with out any regen breaking (I'll put the car in neutral).

If someone knows of a solution that the service folks will do I'd like to hear about it.

The first thing that comes to mind is a constant velocity joint going bad.

With no regen braking (car in neutral) there is no ticking. Would a CV joint be sensitive to that?

Could well be: the dynamics of a CV joint in Drive are different than in Neutral: in Drive the engine/transaxle is pushing the inside half of the joint, whereas in Neutral the 2 sides of the joint are more freely turning

I've been hearing whirring and clicking|ticking sounds from the engine compartment. The whirring is similar to what I hear whenever I open the driver's side door up to before pushing Start. I assume it's the magic elves going to work in anticipation of making the car run after Ready (or whatever the electronic equivalent of magic elves is). Still, it's occurred to me that dismissing all these sounds as the work of magic elves I should blindly trust doesn't seem like the wisest policy..

Here's a link to one of the better threads on the subject.

Weird ticking sound, please help *video* | PriusChat

It's like a gremlin, some say replacing the drive shaft assembly fixes it. I, like others, find a $700 price tag pretty high to maybe fix an issue the dealers can't successfully seem to diagnose. We just roll with it and hope for the best.

If you're under warranty, then definitely pursue and pester the service department.

I moved to Redding, CA last August and recently complained about the noise to the Redding Toyota Service people. They verified the noise, used some microphones to determine which side it was occurring on, and then replaced the axel. Noise gone! That was a much better result than the Sunnyvale Toyota people who did nothing. Anyway, now I'm a happy camper! And it was covered under the extended drive train warranty!

I have exactly he same issue, asked my local dealer to check but they told me they can't hear anything (as I expected). Any dealership can I go in SoCal area? My car is still under bumper-to-bumper warranty thou.

I heard yesterday (from Eric the Car Guy, no less):

Clicking sound when turning right can be left side CV joint going bad. And vice versa.

They don't get better so maybe a second opinion, and/or a bit of time, and they'll sort it out. With bad CV they typically swap out the whole shaft with joints.

In my post #11 above I said the Redding Toyota dealer replaced an axle and that fixed the noise. Now about 3 years later the same noise has returned. I'm out of warranty so I hope not to replace an axle. The service rep said he wouldn't do it on his car because they have never had an axle fail on a Prius. Hmmmmm..... I wonder?

My question: Is this known to be a serious issue where the axle might, or is likely to, fail?
