Any way to reset when low gas warning comes on?

In my 2013 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon), the gas warning light does not come on until I only have 10 miles left till empty. When this happened last, I was on my way to the beach and it was 20 miles to the next gas station.

In every other car I've owned, I get about a 30 mile notice.

Is there any way to fix/adjust this in the Prius?

You probably have more than 10 miles worth of gas in the tank, since there is typically around a 2 gallon reserve when the light comes on. On the other hand, just fill it up before the light comes on...

The manual says the tank on a v is 11.9 gallons. My no bars indication goes on at about -10 gallons (eg it takes 10 gallons to fill). I have run it down to -11 gallons and still operate. Others have put in the whole 11.9 gallons and were still running. One guy claims to have put in 12.5 gallons when it actually did run out of gas (although he made it to the station on EV). He probably put in the extra 0.6 gallons by continuing to fill the pipe up to the cap after it clicked off, which you should not do because of the vapor recovery.

The bottom line: Check how much gas you put in at zero range or zero bars. It will probably be less than 10.5 gallons meaning your real range left is close to another 40 or 50 miles.

I am not one of those "fill it at 1/4 tank guys" and usually run it down to the low fuel indicator. I did run out once in my 08 Prius and was able to drive about 2 miles on battery to the station. The Gen2 cars had a particularly finicky gas tank bladder that had extra range one time and no range the next. After that, the HV could not supply any supplemental power for a few minutes and the car was very sluggish. But it did start up after it was filled again. It still runs like new with ~90k miles and both original batteries (and Michelin tires).

How do you KNOW that is the case?
Have you actually run out ??

While it's possible, you would be about the only one on the planet to have that situation.......as indicated in the above replies.

There is no direct correlation between the indicated cruising range and the warning light on the gas gauge. When the last pip on the gas gauge goes out its time to fill up. Even so you should still have a minimum of 1 gal remaining in the tank. The warning light can go on then go off again depending on the temperature, whether you're going uphill or down, etc. Its just a reminder.

The UK tank holds 45 Ltr, I always run down to the flashing last pip or more and usually I manage to get around 37-38 Ltr in, meaning there's a good 7-8 Ltrs left in the tank. That equates to nearly 100 miles range left but the indicator on the trip is usually quoting something between 0 and 10 miles.

I suspect that is what the OP was referring to also.
Would be nice if he would come back for a followup.

Sorry folks - I got an email about the first reply, but didn't get any more emails so didn't realize anyone else had replied.

What I have heard, in summary, is:

    1. I should watch my gas gauge more consistently and fill up before it gets so low.
Good advice. I will try and take it. My problem, however, is what happens when I neglect
    to do so.
    2. When the light comes on and the miles remaining says 10
    a. I should ignore this, as there is typically a 2 gallon reserve at this point
    b. There is no direct correlation between the indicated cruising range and
the warning light on the gas gauge.
    3. Others have indicated by experience that when the warning light comes on and they
fill up the tank there is 1-2 gallons remaining

So basically, in my case, there IS such a correlation between the warning light and the indicated cruising range. The three times this has happened to me, when the warning light comes on the cruising range says 10 miles.

The advice I'm hearing is that if this happens again I should pay attention to how much gas it takes to fill up the car and then based on the total capacity of tank calculate what the REAL cruising range is when the light comes on.

I'm also hearing that the cruising range is wildly inaccurate; that when it says 10 the cruising range may between 40 and 100 miles left.

And by implication I'm also guessing that there's no way anyone has found to make any adjustments so that the indicated cruising range would have anything to do with reality, i.e., that if in fact the light comes on when there's 1-2 gallons left in the tank, the cruising range would indicated that there are 40-80 miles left before empty.

Does that about sum it up?

    Yes.

But there is no good reason to bother to try and find out how much you really have left.
Just fill it up before the final warning or AT the final warning and everything will be just fine. :)

If you EVER drive where it is 100 miles between gas stations, Murphy's law says that a bad fillup habit will bite you in the butt right there.

I wouldn't say the cruising range is inaccurate. It accurately indicates when I have 2 gallons left in the tank. The low gas chime comes on and the last pip blinks. Comparatively, this is what every car I've ever owned has done. Toyota is not doing anything different than what any manufacturer has done which is warning you to go look for gas with 2 gallons remaining. The difference now is that we have digital gauges and readouts instead of analog ones. There's no more ambiguity of the indicator being above E or under anymore.

There's no need to adjust the gas warning light because you'll just fuel up more often than needed or if you adjust it the other way you'll increase your risk of running out of fuel.

Putting aside all the fascinating information posted about what other models of Prius do, here's what the OP's car does:
The red light on the gas gauge comes on not long after the 2nd to last fuel gauge pip goes out, accompanied by a beep. This can go off again and come back on again depending on conditions. The last fuel gauge pip indicates roughly 2 gal remaining in the tank. When you get down to about 1 gal left, the last pip goes out leaving just the red indicator on. The indicated cruising range can vary a lot during this last pip time depending on the average MPG. If you shut off the car and restart, cruising range can even go up. The point to remember is its not a "countdown", it changes based on conditions. You "adjust" it by adjusting your driving to maximize MPG.

Your best indicator of remaining fuel is the fuel gauge, not the cruising range. The system will not allow you to run the tank dry, it will shut down the ICE before that happens. But keeping at least 1 gal in the tank is certainly prudent to avoid damaging the pump. If you see that last pip go out, you'd best be headed to a gas station.

    2 pips: 3 gal left
    1 pips: 2 gal left
    0 pips: 1 gal left

When myself and wife Elsie get to around 1/2 a tank, we head to the gas station. If she gets to1/4 tank---she panics. Yes, hurricane Katrina was hard on us.....

A good point, and you can't use the car as a generator if there's no gas in it.

    Picky, picky.
OK then, the DISPLAY of the cruising range is inaccurate then.
I don't hardly think you can call it "accurate" when it says you have ZERO miles left when there is still 2 gallons in the tank.

In events such as that, in addition to a full tank, I'd also like some first-hand knowledge more closely locating the real bottom of the tank. Knowledge gained previously under relatively benign conditions.
