I'm sorry but where does this fable that Toyota sells re-manufactured parts as new? They do use some re-manufactured products as repairs under warranty (eg: MFDs), but they are clearly marked as rebuilt. The replacement batteries from Toyota are new parts with new modules (they reuse your existing battery ECU unless you pay for a new one as an additional cost). Anyone who sells re-manufactured parts as new is committing a fraud and is subject to criminal and civil penalties.

First of all, the modules in our Prii are made by Panasonic. Samsung makes the batteries for most of the other car companies. Second, the Gen3 modules are the same shape factor as the Gen2 modules, are currently being manufactured and are available for use in HV batteries configured for a Gen2.

You may well be correct in that the exact modules originally used to build Gen II Prius battery packs are no longer manufactured, BUT, re-read Jeff's quote above and assimilate what he is saying. Particularly the second sentence. It is probably a safe wager to say a new Gen II HV battery pack supplied by Toyota today is better than the original.

Maybe you are confused with the likes of Dorman and Greentec et al; now they do indeed use recycled second-hand modules to re-manufacture battery packs?

    Stop being dense.

If your fairy tale were remotely true, there would be a MASSIVE CLASS ACTION lawsuit, with commercials from the lead law firm, and a notice in your mailbox by the lead law firm, informing you that you are a participant unless you wish to opt out.

We know that Gen3 HV Battery pack modules can fit into a Gen2 HV Pack, b/c they are identical for all intense purposes intents and purposes. Just the cases containing all the modules are different. All auto manufactures want parts to be used on as many models as possible, and for as long as possible. Fine, Gen 2 modules are not being made any more, and that's fine. Gen3 modules are NEW, and still being produced, and are backwards compatible into a Gen 2 HV battery case. Thus, a Gen2 HV Battery from a Toyota dealership is 100% NEW, b/c it contains 100% new modules that are currently being used to make Gen3 HV Batteries.

Hopefully you can now understand this and stop spreading lies that Toyota is selling used/rebuilt HV Batteries as New. If you don't believe us, than go talk to a law firm to try and start a class action law suit.

EDIT inserted above. Thanks for catching the error.

Really, if your purposes are that intense, why are you driving a Prius?

I totally missed that on first reading....

And the invoice for your remanufactured brake caliper probably states "REMANUFACTURED" too?

Let me set the record straight. No gen 2 battery being made gen3 are for the time being.the battery pack from Toyota is remanufactrue with good cells that have been load test and recondition.not all gen3 new cells.one year warranty reflects that.when you buy the 12 volt battery from toyota it come with 84 month warranty.because it is all new.not like the hybrid battery.what do you think toyota does with the core it takeIin ???.thats the facts.sorry you dont believe them.

Sadly, there is nothing here anyone can say to make you see that what you believe is irrational and illogical.

It is assumed an auto part is NEW. If not new, the auto part store, auto repair shop, etc, has to disclose that the part is used, rebuilt, remanufactured, reconditioned, etc; anything but 100% new. And this will be indicated on the part and invoice. If the store/repair facility does not disclose this, they are committing fraud, and it will cost them money, loss or suspended business license, and possibly incarceration.

When you last bought auto parts, at whatever auto part store or dealership, did every single part say NEW on the box and invoice? Lets say you were doing an old school tune-up: spark plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter. Was each part indicated by "NEW"?
NEW spark plugs or spark plugs, NEW
NEW distributor cap or distributor cap, NEW
    NEW rotor or rotor, NEW
NEW fuel filter or fuel filter, NEW

Since you feel that Toyota is selling used/remanufactured/rebuilt HV Batteries as new, you should really contact a law firm that specializes in litigation against auto manufactures. You stand to get a decent amount of money as the lead and initiating plaintiff.

So please start this process, as this is the only way you will come to realize the HV Batteries are NEW.

Ok, let's stop the "he said" "she said" yelling back and forth as that will not get us to the truth of the matter.

Kinglew, presumably you have written to (or otherwise communicated with) Toyota to confirm your theory and they have given you a "neither confirm nor deny" response or no response at all. Is that correct? How then, do you confirm that what you say is true? What it sounds like to me is that this is just your theory. You are the only one spreading these rumours. I would rather that you were straight up and just came out laid your cards on the table as to how you know these "are that facts".

From what I have understood right back from 2007 when I researched the Toyota Prius, prior to purchasing my first one, is that Toyota looked at the manufacturing cycle of the Prius from cradle to grave and ensured that as much of the Prius as possible was recycled and was reusable, hence (for one thing) the high use of recyclable plastics in the interior finish. This included the NiMH batteries. My understanding is that there is a very high percentage of the battery can be broken down and recycled back into 100% brand new battery modules.

If your theory is true and upon repatriation to Toyota's facilities, batteries are tested and deemed suitable for rebuild into a battery pack, then Toyota could not afford all that would come from the revelation that they were selling rebuilt packs as new. The commercial reality of business life is just that it would be commercial suicide for Toyota to take that approach. One thing I do know is that large organisations highly value their business reputation and would not do a stupid thing such as this, period.

I do know that not every single battery module makes it straight back to the recycling plant, as in practice Toyota has found some modules are no longer suitable for car batteries, but are not end of life. So these modules go to Toyota's charitable activities and are donated to worthy causes. One such programme I heard of, an organisation received some of these "not at end of life modules" and were able to build a battery storage farm to harness the the energy captured from photo voltaic (PV) solar panels.

So, to round off, I would rather that you presented evidence that we can corroborate and then agree with you. Otherwise, just let us know it is your theory of what you think happens. Please just don't present it as fact and expect us to believe it.

I welcome further sane and rational discussion on this subject.
