THe PIP bars are useless once it starts blinking. I don't see how any one can use those as reference.

What's the true empty on the tank? as cproaudio noted it filled up with 12.3 gallons.

The PiP supposedly has a 10.6 gallon tank, but when I ran it "out", the gas engine quit without warning and refused to re-engage. I filled with only 10.2 gallons, which suggests that 0.4 gallons went unused. 0.4 gallons is a lot considering it's nearly 4% of the total tank capacity, and should get me another 20 miles down the road.

My guess is the Prius shuts off the gas engine at the first sign of running out of fuel, or perhaps even before it ever starves for fuel based on a sensor reading. Perhaps this is done to protect the drive-train from potential damage due to inconstant combustion.

All of the other vehicles I've driven previously have been capable of using the full rated fuel capacity or more.

I'm curious if anyone has been able to fill to the full rated tank capacity, or near to it?

In May of 2014 I almost made 800 mi. on a tank - I was close & had a 1 gal can with me in case I didn't make it. About 784 mi. the engine quit & I added the 1 gal of fuel, then went straight to the local filling station. When I filled up I had 786.2 miles & (including the 1gal I added) it took 11.947 gal. to fill. I did not fill up the filler neck. Actual mpg 65.81, indicated 69.1 mpg

Nice! that's a real world test! 11.9 almost on the dot then! 12.3 did sounded a little off.

So hinting 600 for me is just out of reach.. oh well..

Pearl S can't go any miles. She only uses kilometers. About 900 to a tankfull, though I've never tried to go that far. I have gone about 700 km with still lots of gas left. But I usually refill at 1/2 a tank indicated.

Fill ups over 12 gallons at the pump , any one guess the pump was miscalculated ,,, showing
Say 12 gallons when you actually put in 11 gallons ,,,, think of the extra profit the station makes ,,,
Very easy for owner to Tweak a reading

I kinda doubt that. Probably impossible for starters, and even if they could cheat, they'd be on 'em like a ton of bricks.

Well, a few station owners have been caught cheating like that. But more likely the extra fuel is due to a -complete- fill. I can put 6-10 litres more into Pearl S after the first auto-shutoff. That's one to two gallons, perhaps more.

You also have to watch for "blow back." When I hear the tank reaching FULL (there's a change in pitch you can hear as it's filling), I shut off the nozzle and manually squeeze the handle to maybe 50% of max. Filling at 100% puts a lot of air in that washes back up can will trigger the pump to stop sooner than what you can get in there.

I dont top off my cars at all anymore. when it clicks its done.

On my motorcycle I do top off as much as I can, BUT I do so very, very carefully ever since I had a malfunctioning pump not click off and blow gas all over me and my bike! That sucked..

I've had the "auto shut off" splash gas down the side of my car/truck. I don't trust them...period. At least if it spills when I "top off," it's my own fault.

    670 best
    640 sometimes
~600 always, except highway driving (even @70 mph it's problematic to get to 50mpg)
Obviously, depends on mpg you achieve
at ~12 GL in tank multiply on mpg
Suburban driving usually gets me 55mpg or better. Hypermiling record took me to >70mpg
Highway no better than 46, in a hurry - 40

AFTER gauge biped, 0 ml remain routinely drive 130 ml (experimentally got 150 ml till stop)
"Anti"-record - was caught by surprise after 100 ml when engine stalled on a highway (was speeding)
Anyone may safely repeat the experiment by carrying gas-filled large soda bottle (or gas tank) and stopping to refill at the first engine stall or red light on dashboard

In response to ml per tank being pointless - at least one use: long distance driving. Frequently doing North States to Florida trips, very important to make fewest stops possible. Only Prius makes it possible to refuel ONCE.
Lesser point - getting to the cheapest gas station: with the range of ~150-200 ml after getting to the last degree on fuel gauge there is much more flexibility getting to a cheaper state and cheapest station there. ( on i-95 those currently are NJ and VA. Regular vehicle would hardly make it from one state to another without refueling)

I always fill up at 2 bars. By then I'm usually in the 415ish range.

Miles per tank is pretty meaningless. MPG (or Gallons Per Mile) is the only thing that really matters to me.

That was planned, but I was expecting to go further. The flashing pip went for almost 100 miles.

Aaa put in 2 gallons and the car didn't start. Put in 2 more gallons, still didn't start. Reset the car by disconnecting the 12v negative and car still had a flashing pip. Still didn't start. Waited 10 minutes, tried 1 more time and it started. ....still with a flashing pip after 4 gallons.

what was the trip MPG for flashing pip? As soon as the last pip beeps and flashs, I reset trip A. I just filled up the tank this morning. Trip A was 80 miles with MID indicated 60.4mpg.
