Lightning in volcanic ash clouds is always fascinating. do not know how the +/- charges get separated. Not even a wiki page!

Speculation, the ash is non-conductive and the turbulence more than enough to friction-charge the particles.

The ash is also going to be dry, making any charge build up easier.

There certainly would be an ample supply of cloud condensation nuclei! ;)

I suspect that the lightning production is similar to lightning in typical convection, only more intense.

...electrons don't stay put ...they want to migrate between interfaces of different materials, especially if they are in counter motion. Thankfully I guess this is how life began.

This is how I remember Calbuco, bicycling around Lake Osorno during our pedal tour of Chile's Lakes and Volcano District in November 2013:

Actually I was riding in the sag wagon, due to a bad food reaction the day before. But everyone else was pedaling their way to our next stop of Puerto Varas.

I hope this is the right one. We saw lots and lots of volcanoes on this trip. Another one we were near, Villarica, near Pucón, erupted last month.

I actually got an "explanation" for this today in my email feed from SpaceWeather.com (see the Home page explanation):
Looks like the Outer Limits TV show intro to me.
