Steve Woodruff replaced the engine harness, repaired the vacuum line, replaced the water pump pulley, replaced the intake manifold but the missing cylinder problem continues. He said he would try replacing the fuel injectors next. Maybe the guy who recommended I give up on the car was right. I really thought replacing the engine harness would take care of the problem.

no, the engine harness he said he would charge $600 for, but he also had mentioned he does not charge for "wrong answers" , He said he would not charge for the intake manifold. I am going to ask if he will charge for the engine harness.

even above the cost of the attempted repairs to my car is a rental car at $50 a day, motel $50, gas about $50 each way, and missing work $250 so far, another $250 if i have to pick it up next week during the week. I wrote steve if it is not the fuel injectors maybe he would let me come pick up the car sunday so I don't have to miss more work and let my clients (who I see as a therapist for their mental problems) down by canceling them again.

i'm just kidding, steve has a great rep. sometimes these older cars are difficult to diagnose. but please don't take any more time off, we don't need anymore people going off the rails.;)

Owning a car like that could easily induce severe mental problems...good luck with the fuel injector replacement, there aren't that many more things to try.

seems like the harness did need replacing since some hack cut it.

I have seen a bad ecu cause misfires, but on other brands of cars. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Good point, I am sure that Steve has no shortage of engine ECUs to try if he gets to that point.

If the OP's car did not have such a low odometer reading, I would suggest verifying engine compression to see whether cylinder 1 has a problem.

In the OPs post #1, she already had the compression checked. The specialist listed 3 options that could be the problem.

I take the car to a mechanic reputed for repairing hybrids (Curt’s Service, Oak Park, MI). He tests the car for several hours. He notes the problem starts at the beginning of drives then goes away but is intermittent. He spends 45 min explaining the problem could be in the wiring harness (cost $300 to check), could be in the computer control unit (cost $1400 to replace) or could need engine repair.( cost $3300) (local mechanic does not think engine is the problem due to good compression).

Also the fuel injectors and coils have been swapped numerous times.....but really no mention of changing spark plugs again.

I am very happy to report that my car is most probably fixed!!!! Drove it 420 miles the last 2 days with 4 successful cold starts. I will know FOR SURE later this week when it has passed the test of more time. Steve Woodruff said he believed each of the problems he fixed: engine harness, water pump pulley, intake manifold and fuel injectors may have contributed to the cylinder misfiring.
I also noticed that where as before Steve worked on the car, the HV battery charge was usually about 6 bars high and blue (only green about 5 % of the time). Since his repairs the battery charge is mostly green (90%) and right up to the top, 9 bars.
I want to heartily thank everyone who took part in this post's thread. Without it I am convinced my car may have been sold for parts.
