    Hello,

Someone recently commented to me my tail light is out when I press on the breaks no light... Also the running light at night isn't working... Help! What do I need to replace?

PS Is it wise to go LED?

    1) Read the owners manual. It covers the replacement of the bulbs. If you don't have the manual, goto Toyota.com, owners resources to download the sections you need.

    2) read this link for bulb needed: 37r tail light bulb? | PriusChat

    3) Headlight switch has three positions.
Off position) all lights off: tail lights, head lights
Middle position) marker lights on (tail lights and front marker lights) and dash lights on
Headlight position) marker lights and dash lights remain on, now headlights come on.

Your tail light(s) are out b/c the bulb is/are burned out. Has nothing to do w/ brake lights.

Upgrading tail light bulb to LED bulbs is a personal choice. They are brighter and last a very long long time though.

EDIT: If LED brake lights are truly out, you have 3 options.
    1) replace the rear brake light assembly w/ a new part (sadly LED not a service item).
    2) replace the brake light assembly w/ a used part
    3) do the creative led brake light replacement surgery: $1 Prius LED Brake Light Repair | PriusChat

i would just go to the auto parts store, get a $2. bulb and replace. it's a simple twist out and twist in, takes 2 minutes. all the best!(y)

If the brake lights and the tail lights both are not working, perhaps the problem is a loose connection to body ground. You would need to examine the wiring harness connecting to the rear light assembly, and trace the harness until you see wires bolted to the body. Then make sure the connection is tight. If there is any corrosion, unbolt the wires, clean off the corrosion, and then reattach the wires to see if the problem is resolved.

Ahh, Patrick's post reminds me of some people discovering that the bulb housing not making a firm contact w/ the bulb.
Test your tail light bulbs for continuity. If the test says the bulbs are still good, you need to rule out the wiring as Pat suggests or it maybe the bulb housing itself, as the metal wires are not making good contact w/ the bulb wires. Would need to bend the housing wire somehow so it makes better contact with the bulb.
