Thats the only symptoms its currently giving us the lights. It doesnt run bad or go in limp mode or anything. The car has 200k on it and runs great. She doesnt consume oil and we are still on the stock batteries so I have been ecstatic with the car. I am positive the brake lights are working as I see my wife get home everyday and they are working fine. Is this something that could possibly leave my wife and kids stranded on the side of the interstate? Thats a majior concern for me right now.

Also if I get the 2 day TIS subscription will it allow me to print out the pertinent info I need to remove the dash?

Probably not - however if you leave the car as-is and another problem develops, your wife may not be aware of it if she is used to seeing the warning lights come on all the time and starts to think of that as normal behavior. So maybe you should switch cars with your wife if you are concerned about the reliability of her transportation.

Regarding techinfo, I would try printing to .pdf files. I haven't needed to access techinfo for a long time.

:)Thanks so much for your help. I will report back with what I decide to do.

Instead of pulling the dash I removed the glove box and temporarily put the new hv ecu in via zip ties. I turn the car on and a lot of dash lights are on but not the red triangle. Is there a reset or something I need to do?

There is a process to get the hybrid vehicle ECU and transponder key ECU to recognize each other - did you follow that process? If not, you can get the process from techinfo.

I didn't use tech info site. I have access to alldata website and really didn't see a process there. I will look to see if it list it. I tried putting the car in gear and it would not do anything. Standby and thanks for the help.

The process depends upon whether your car has the Smart Entry/Smart Start system or not.

It does have the smart key where you walk up and grab the handle to unlock the door. Is that what you mean?

Yes. So your car has the SE/SS system. When you access techinfo, look for the instructions associated with the car having that system.

Well I just bought a 2 day subscription but it's not a user friendly site to say the least. Where do I go to even acces repair material for my car?

Alright I found it but it says some systems need initializing. I hit info and it takes me to how to reset (initialize)power window regulator. Is that the same? It doesn't say anything about smart keys.

Alright I'm slowly getting close but I still can't find it. Am I missing something here?

I agree that techinfo is not particularly easy to use. You were getting close - look for the Engine Immobilizer (w/ Smart Key) section, then Registration.

    1. Insert your already registered master key fob into the dashboard slot.
    2. Press the brake pedal and make the Prius READY.
    3. Wait for at least three seconds.

Hopefully your car will show some signs of life at that point.

That's what I tried with no luck in it working. I am at a loss. I am fixing to have to hook the other ecu back up so we can use the car. Very very aggrevated at this point.

Well I found what you are referring to but I don't understand what it's asking for when it says to connect terminals tc and cg.

Edit: I found this but what is the sst and where can I get one?
    Thanks for the help.

    Here is something I found:

    5. ECU COMMUNICATION ID REGISTRATION

    NOTICE:

The ECU communication ID should be registered when the transponder key ECU and/or the hybrid

vehicle control ECU is replaced in order to match the HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU

    COMMUNICATION ID.

The hybrid vehicle control system cannot be started unless the HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL

    ECU COMMUNICATION ID matches.

When the transponder key ECU has been replaced, do not turn the power switch from ON to OFF

20 times or more consecutively. The ECU COMMUNICATION ID must be registered before such

an occurrence or the transponder key ECU will need to be replaced. If the transponder key ECU

is unable to recognize the hybrid vehicle control ECU, the hybrid vehicle control system will

be unable to be started. If the transponder key ECU cannot recognize the hybrid vehicle control

ECU, the transponder key ECU must be replaced again with a new one.

After the registration, pressing the power switch may not start the system on the first try. If so,

    press the power switch again.

After the hybrid vehicle control system is started, erase DTC B2799 (code for hybrid vehicle

control ECU’s immobilizer communication error) using either of the following:

Use the hand-held tester (see page 05-2357 ).

Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds

So if you had tried more than 20 times to operate the car with the new HV ECU installed, without registering the communications ID, it may be necessary to replace the transponder key ECU...

If you can find that page, it should also show you a picture of the OBD-II connector so you can see the terminals TC and CG which need to be shorted together if you want to try that procedure. However the shorter procedure which does not require this shorting process is supposed to work as long as the transponder key ECU hasn't given up after 20 IG-ON tries.

I have put the old ecu back in and driven it so I know I didn't hit the 20 consecutive try. I was sure close though. Putting the key in the slot didn't work. I may try jumping the wires tomorrow but I am always scared to jump wires.

Well we got home from breakfast after driving the car I decided I would give the jumper a try. Hooked the new computer back up and jumped the wires in the obdll port. Let her sit for 30 minutes and come back............. Same thing........ Nothing. I'm gonna go bang my head against the wall now.

    Thanks

Well I got a ecu today that worked. Once I jumped the obd pins she loaded as she should. Thanks for all of the help and sticking with me through this me. Now my fingers are crossed that I will not have the codes come up again. :)

Is the newly installed ECU still sticking out of the glove compartment area and bouncing around as you drive, while you wait to see if the problem is resolved? :D

    A few other questions:

The first replacement ECU apparently was inoperative?
Do you have a local source for the used ECUs?
    What was the pricing?
Were all of the replacement ECUs the same part number as original, and what was the needed part number?

LOL... no it isnt bouncing around, I zip tied it in place.

Yes the first ECU was inoperative (it wouldnt allow initalization to start)
I lucked up and found a local guy with a prius he was parting out because he had run it out of oil.
I bought it from him for $40
Yes they are all the same part numbers. p/n- 8998147212

As I am typing this my wife just called and said the cruise started flashing at her again. :(
Now I am just waiting on the dash to light up again. I will scan it this afternoon to see if the codes are the same.

So the CRUISE light is flashing, but the ABS, VSC, and ((!)) lights are not on?

Correct.........They sometimes happen at different times. For instance this weekend I was stopped at a light and the brake, ABS, VSC, and ((!)) lights came on.
I turned the cruise on and it wasnt flashing . I was able to use it without any problems.

And now she calls and says the brake, ABS, VSC, and ((!)) lights came on as soon as she turned the car on. Gotta get the computer out this afternoon.

Well the code is p0607. Made a new observation as well. The left brake light is dimmer than the right sometimes and the center light is flickering a little. The left eventually got bright as the right but once you let off and press it again it's dim again.

So do you think the hv ecu needed replacement or is it something to do with the brake system?

    Here it is!!!
