we just replaced the hybird battery it gave us the red death symbol but then it went away and the car drove well.. But just now it threw a problem sign and the triangle again.. And now it shows no power going to the battery (by looking at the display) and it will not go above 37 mpg...

I would take this up with whoever replaced the battery pack. It likely has some kind of guarantee on it. It could be an installation issue or an internal problem that just arose inside the pack.

It may also be helpful to know which problem codes it is producing. Not all code readers can read the hybrid codes, it may need to be read at a Toyota service department, the business that replaced the HV pack (if they are so equipped) or with a Techstream reader.

    Hi Letha,

It looks like you've started a couple different threads here on the same issue, this one and this other one.

It's kind of helpful if you don't do that, because people may give you helpful responses on one thread that people reading the other thread won't see, and then your problem doesn't get solved as quickly as it could.

    Cheers,
    -Chap

I suggest you get Mini VCI so that you can retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes logged by your car.

The piece in your pictures is the intake duct for the cooling fan. It wouldn't be right but the car would operate fine without it. Its hard to tell from your photo what is actually missing. That duct is one solid piece except for the small air filter that's riveted to it (which is in your picture). If something is actually missing it would have had to have been cut off which wouldn't make any sense. Hope you figure this out but it's not the reason that your car is not working.

How do you know when the battery is going dead? I have a 2007 with 107,000 miles. The battery is in the blue at first start up in the morning then indicates battery empty (2 black bars) instantly then revs up to compensate, goes to green then back to blue instantly. This morning it reved up so high, I thought it was going yo explod.

One nice thing about a Prius is that the gasoline engine is fully under computer control at all times. The computer never runs it outside a perfectly safe RPM range - even when it sounds higher than you usually hear it rev, you can be sure that it is in the safe range and not going to explod. (If it ever does, it would have to be from a defective or damaged rod, bearing, etc., never from over-revving.)

As for knowing when the battery is nearing the end of its useful life ... when it gets very close to the end, the computer will store codes identifying the exact problem, and turn on the hybrid warning light on the dash so you know there are codes that need to be read. Before that happens, you can get some idea of how good or bad the battery's condition might be by looking at the individual battery block voltages and resistances and how consistent they are, especially under load. Not all diagnostic scan tools can read that information for you, but one of them that can is called the Mini VCI, is quite inexpensive, and is used by a lot of people here on PC to read the same data the dealer can.

These are the tell tale signs that a cell in your battery has shorted out and failed. Its empty in the morning because it rapidly self discharges after you turn off the car. Then it spikes high when it gets turned on again. Its not really the whole battery but the computer is looking at the cell with the highest or lowest voltage which is the bad one. The majority of the battery failures in my area are occurring in 06 model cars. Yours went a little sooner due to its low mileage. If it hasn't yet your dash will light up within a few days with all of the battery warnings. If you pull the codes they will tell you which of the blocks has failed.

Will I need to buy the Mini VCI to get the codes or will they be available through the System Check Mode? Also, will I be able to fix one cell at a time must I buy the whole battery?
