hello, we traded our Prius for a C yesterday but orig had a C and thought we needed it for traveling/space but things changed.
I dont know if its a one? It has CC though. Dealer was not a Toyota dealer and Toyota itself doesnt know as well.

Anyways they gave one key to get into it (doesnt have smart key nor a push button start) and I can kinda am ok with the no push button start thing but getting in and out of the car with a key proved to a pain and you have to use the buttons on the side door to open the hatch, other doors.

So wanted to know first can these doors on this car be opened and closed/locked/unlocked with a remote? Does it have the capability to do this with a replacement remote?

Today we drove it back and heres a screenshot of the MPG in out nearly 400 mile trip. The MPG was outstanding @60.3 MPG And we had the AC on going 70mph at times.

Also one last question, when the car is off that little red flashing lock and key icon on the dash flashes rapidly. Is that the immobilizer thing? I just thought the basic C (which I thought this is since no push button to start it) didnt have that immobilizer in it.

From what I read though the basic C or one doesnt have CC, split back rear seat or an engine immobilizer.

If anyone has replaced a key like this or knows if it will be able to lock/open etc with a remote, please reply, thanks.

Day 2 and Im losing patience with this key to use in the door! lol

here is attachment showing the MPG:

Sounds like you have a two. Mine C2 came with three keys. Two of them have the remote buttons right in the key (which imo is the best thing ever, hate fobs). The third key has no remote. You may be able to get new a new key with remote and get it to work, likely have to go to the dealer though and it won't be cheap. Good luck.

    This is NOT true.
Maybe the one incompetent dealer you checked with doesn't know but............
Given the VIN, any dealer should be able to find out which model it really IS and explain how the locking works.

If it really is a ONE, then I think about all you can do it get a spare key made.......but I'm not sure about that.
    Find another dealer.

    thanks for the reply.
Yes I think its a two cause of the CC, immobilizer, split rear seats. I called a dealer and you are right, not cheap. On EBay there is one with the buttons for like 30.00 and has to be programmed by the dealer which is 60.00 they said. Dealer charges 190.00 for key and Ebay is 30 so Im thinking I will go that way.

I did give the VIN to a few dealers and they cant tell me if its a one/two etc.

I also called Toyota directly before I bought it to ask about the warranty and gave the VIN to them and they also cant tell me what the car is other that it is a Prius C.

    thanks for the reply.

The third key is the so-called "valet" key, which presumably allows a parking lot attendant ("valet") limited operation of your car. This key has no buttons and is cut differently from the other two keys so as to restrict the functions available to the attendant.

On a Prius c One, three sets of keys are provided, NONE OF WHICH supports so-called "chip" keys, also known as "immobilizer" keys.

The buttons are there simply to facilitate entry into the car, either the driver's side (one click) or all doors (two clicks separated by 5 seconds); the mechanical key is still required to unlock the steering wheel and to operate the ignition.

Personally, I dislike buttons, and I use only a duplicate mechanical key for all functions. The two operation method (two right-hand turns of the driver's side key separated by 5 seconds) still works with a purely mechanical key.

Obviously, the mechanical key is still required once you enter the vehicle.

With specific respect to the "valet" key: although this key is indeed cut differently from the so-called "master" key, I could not observe any functional difference in the actual operation of the keys. The keys with buttons are called "master" keys, but these are a "master" only for your specific vehicle.

Some locksmiths are capable of duplicating "immobilizer" keys: it is a relatively insecure technology which decodes the "secret" code, increments it, and then encodes the "secret" code, and the "immobilizer" sensor ring, which encircles the mechanical key opening, sends and receives the "secret" to the chip within the key.

Hackers have completely broken the "immobilizer" technology, and thieves have been observed using their "black box" to gain entry and to drive away a "target" vehicle. Apparently, the "black box" rapidly sequences through all possible "secret" codes within moments.

thanks for the info, interesting, did not know.

I found out just before by going thru the car that it in a TWO by seeing the orig. sticker off the window from the dealer.
On that it says it has remote keyless entry which I am happy to read.
Now I just have to buy the key on Ebay (WAY cheaper than a dealer) and bring to the dealer to program.

I found this plastic key in there too to open the door in case key is locked inside I guess?

Sure sounds like you have a 2. I have a 1 and my car does not have the blinking key light or the immobilizer. I also have the bench seat with no cruise control as well.

Might want to call around to a few locksmiths before you spend any money.
Sometimes they can do it ALL for you at half or less what the dealer charges.
Sometimes you get the wrong or bad stuff from Ebay.

yes you are right. I did find that info thing dealers have on the window of new cars and its a Two plus all the things like CC, immobilizer, etc indicate that as well. I had a two before the other Prius that had the entune thing in it and the smart key thing, was nice but you make due what you have. :)

Oh really? A locksmith can also program it too? But what about the electronics of the key thing, they sell those too?
    thanks.

You can shop online for Toyota dealerships that offer very good pricing on oem parts.
An example: a new SKS fob (with key) for my 2015 c is about $129.

Some ACE Hardware stores can duplicate a "chip" ("imobilizer") key, but their mechanical key duplication machines are often suspect.

Professional locksmith shops (the kind which do security jobs) have machines which are much tighter in their tolerances than ACE, and these can also duplicate a "chip" key. Trouble is, they charge about twice what ACE does. As usual, you get what you pay for.

ACE and a professional shop will generally use the same key blank (ILCO X217/TR47 for a metal "bowed", non-"chip" key; of course, the "chip" keys have a plastic "bow").

Thats good to hear, thanks. Odd it doesnt fit well into the door but does into the ignition, they said it will have to wear down some. Ya I do love this car and I have been thru a Prius (whatever the main one is called) another Prius C that I traded for the larger Prius but the C is really the best for what I do and I didnt like that larger Prius screen (they need to update it)

I do not know why they list the Prius as more gas mileage than the Prius C. The highest I got on my same routes on that Prius was 52mpg. The C has been getting like 60+. (gaging it on same outside temps) Today to the locksmith and then to the dealer for rotation/balancing I drove 72 miles total and still got 62mpg. Very happy with this car!

thanks for the info. Didnt know that ACE did that at all. May get another key as well.

BTW the remotes FCC ID is:

On my Prius C you don't have to wait 5 seconds between clicks to unlock all doors - in fact if you do the car treats it as a separate request and unlocks only the drivers door (again). I click the unlock button twice with about a 1/2 or 1 second interval between them to unlock all doors. I don't have to wait for the lights to finish flashing from the first click before clicking again.

YES. In many areas they do.
The savings can be large; certainly worth a few phone calls to find out.

[edit] I see that the problem is solved already.

Cars come new with three key sets:

    1) two identical keys with fobs, one of which has a metal tag which the dealer (or a licensed locksmith) may use to make a duplicate key using the "cut by code" method, and

    2) one "valet" key, which is supposed to have limited functionality, as for use by a valet at, say, a restaurant.

The C1 comes with those described above, and which DO NOT HAVE the "immobilizer" function.

The intermediate level trims come, variously, with a similar key set, but which DOES HAVE the "immobilizer" function. The "bow" of the "valet" key is larger than the "valet" key on a C1 as it incorporates a "chip".

The highest level trim comes with a fob with an emergency mechanical key. The car is started by the familiar "START" button on the dash.

On the C1, there is no "immobilizer", so a mechanical key which is duplicated by a competent locksmith is all that is required to perform all functions without the fob.

I am awash with fobs from other vehicles, so when I added the C1 to my stable, I put the fobbed keys away, and I use only a duplicate mechanical key. One has to use a mechanical key of SOME type, anyway, on a C1, whether it is a Toyota OEM key with a fob or a duplicate key made by a locksmith on an ILCO X217/TR47 key blank.

Thanks for your reply Peter, very good info there. I'm still waiting for another key by mail, dealer suppose to send. Glad I got a C2 though they advertised it as a C4.
