Problem with rear brakes...No pressure when bleeding

    I also deliver mail and understand the wear this does to brakes , in previous car changing pads was a chore every few months! . One and half years in my older prius and my brakes are as yet untouched.


    I read in the Bentley Manual on replacing the pads, and it seems fairly straightforward, compress the front caliper,and adjust the rear star wheel adjuster. More components had to be replaced in your case, and that's where it got tricky. As a diyer I might try what hobbit and ivanbg stated in a prior post. And sometimes it does take professional help. Let us know how it turns out.

    update: I've replaced both my front and rear pads on my 04 prius that I've ran on a mail route on the last 70,000 miles, it has 180k on it, phenomenal compared to previous route car.

    This will not "reset the system". It will only clear the error code. If you have buggered up your brake system it will still be buggered after you clear any codes.

    Clearing the codes is a reset of the system. In my case I set off an error of the abs system and brake system, so the lights were on, on the dash. Clearing the trouble codes just tells the car to recheck everything to make sure the problems was fixed. If the problem still persists than the lights come back on again on the dash.

    If that is not a reset of the system then what is????

    This is a GREAT post. Just did my 2004 Prius pads at 80,000 miles. They still had a little more pad left, but I'm glad I replaced them.

    Wait 2min, pull relays, pull 2 caliper bolts and flip it upside down and then spread the calipers (with the old pads in it). Put the new pads in and re-assemble. Then you are done.

    Hard part ? getting the dam wheels off. they were stuck on there good.

    I too lost pressure at the real wheels when bleeding the brakes. I got just about every fault light there was. I had no pressure at the rear drum brake piston, but no air in the system. I was pretty worried that I was going to need to go to the dealer because when I applied the bakes, there was no pressure at the real wheels.
    However, I reset the fault codes and all was well again.

    Whatever solenoid got stuck closed, opened back up, and the system re pressurized.

    I have a 2005 Prius and I have the same problem you are describing. Randomly the front panel lights won't work, the Cruise is dead and the start button won't turn her off. I have had to let her run all night because of that. It will eventually start working properly. I have to replace the blower motor before I work on that problem.

    Is there a reason you resurrected this thread? You aren't trying to bleed the brakes, right?

    Are you experiencing Luscious Garage | Blog | LG TV - Prius Dead Dashboard The combination meter can be fixed instead of replaced.

    Are you on the original 12 volt? If so, it's toast. If not, run a voltage test at Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery | PriusChat after the car has sat overnight. Tell us the 3 voltages.

    Go to 2010 prius bleeding brakes on youtube and you will see how to bleed the brakes without the dealer or any type of instrument.

    This is tough stuff learning to service a prius. Im learning. So can others who have common sense and some mechanical experience and aptitude.

    I recommend not posting stuff unless you really know. The answers are out there. We must study hard.

    New priuses are easier to work on as they have been redesigned with more access to parts that need replacing, such as the engine water pump, belt, pulley and thermostat. Same for the radiator hoses and several other critical parts. "2010 prius bleeding brakes" shows how to do it without the dealer or any instruments.

    Youtube also shows how to replace all coolant with only a 5.00 multimeter.

    With a few cheap special tools, you can change the trans fluid and the aux battery.

    Its all doable.

    Remember that brake fluid is hydroscopic. It absorbs moisture over time. I bleed my 2007 prius brakes once a year. This saves the hydraulics from corrosion and rust.

    I just sanded the rear drums and shoes and cleaned everything with brake clean when I adjusted the brakes. This is also on youtube.

    We must do preventative maintenance or trade the thing in at 150,000 and start fresh again for that sweet new car "good life".

    The laws of physics apply the same to the toyota prius.

    Check google and youtube. Buy some good snap on tools and instruments. Invest in your prius. Talk to dealer mechanics. Bring them lunch. Beer. Etc. They know the secrets.

    Take classes on the prius at jr colleges.

    Buy the manual.

    Get serious.

    The dealer is the foremost expert. We need them. But why not learn to do most of it yourself and use the dealer for the worst stuff.

    You must know auto mechanics and prius secrets before attempting much of this. This is advanced stuff.

    Study.

    Plan. Go slow.

    Learn which dealer proceedures are necessary and which are not needed.

    The dealer cannot tell me what and when to do anything to my 2007 prius. I tell them.

    I have made it my business to learn this stuff.

    I know what the car needs. I am in control of this. Not the dealer.

    Prius owners are a "cut above".

    Now study hard.

    Ill try to post more specifics later.
