Doesn't that thought sort of diminish the point of the OP's article? ... tried & true prius, double the sales of all other green vehicles combined ... versus the quickness of plugin acceptability as gauged by quick sales increase

Over 1,100 units were produced from 1996 to 1999, and leased in specially-selected markets. . . . The Nissan Leaf is a much more advanced, inexpensive, practical and aesthetically pleasing EV, and even though it's being sold at a time when gas prices are higher, it still fell massively short of its sales goal for last year.

    • 1,817 Leafs sold in March 2015.

    It does for me.

Another reason the EVs may continue to catch on more quickly is competition.
The Prius was, and still is, king of the hybrids.
    Nothing else comes close.

EVs on the other hand, have lots of different makes with more entering the market all the time.
This competition should drive down prices and increase the variety to meet other aspects of the market.

You are forgetting all the angst over short lived traction batteries.
The main buyer of EVs today are Prius owners. That is not by chance.

"Main buyer" meaning majority, or more than 50%?
    If so, that is false.

The single biggest category would be sports/luxury car drivers.
The angst over battery life was a red herring, a simple talking point which has proven to be a very vaporous point.
And, it has done nothing to prepare people for EVs, as it is still a question raised by some. No change there.

Again, most ev buyers are not replacing a hybrid.

So you think that huge tax breaks and HOV stickers in #1 EV/plugin sale state of CA have nothing to do with it?

Statistically more people traded Prius for Tesla than any other brand. Mercedes and BMW followed with 10.6% and 10.2% respectively. And no it is not 50%, only 15.5% of trade-ins are Prii.

Also pls do not make up categories as you go alone just to tilt perception in your favor. There are Toyota owners and than there are Mercedes and BMW and Audi owners. There are Prius owners and there are Audi A4 owners. But comparing Prii owners to "sports/luxury car drivers" would be like comparing "specialized allez owners" to all motorized vehicle owners - sort of comparing apples to all other foods. Stay within categories defined by the same criterium good luck

No, where did I say incentives had nothing to do with sales levels? Of course incentives have some effect.
Just how big of an affect is questionable, which is why I used the word "possibly".
There are many cars that get those full incentives. By the surveys I have seen, fewer Tesla owners bought the car for the HOV Lane access in CA than the other electrics.

I am sure if incentives disappeared than ev sales would slow. They would also, IMO, surpass hybrid market share.

The only data I saw on that was after the first year of Tesla sales, which were many early adopters. I suspect the Prius owners settled down since then. If your data point is more recent than 2013 I'd love to see that.

I created the surveys looking for what categories of cars had been replaced, not brand or specific model.
I did split efficient hybrids out as I wanted to differenciate efficient cars from the weak hybrids.
I think you would agree that the Prius is not a weak hybrid and would be one of the efficient hybrids. Probably the vast majority of "efficient hybrids" where the luxury/sports category does include many more models.
I suppose O could have simply asked how many people replaced a Prius and how many replaced any other type of vehicle.
Being curious about what type of vehicle was being replaced, I figured one Poll could get much more information.

This gave some very interesting information. I was very surprised by the percentage of truck/SUVs replaced by all of the EVs.

There are other threads asking what model was replaced if you want that info.

He didn't compare Prius to luxury.
His informal polls at other forums asked about hybrids.
