I'm going through the other guy's insurance. Mine wants a 1k deductible and I don't want to wait for them to collect it and end up with a cheaper car in the meanwhile.

Wjtracy, I would only allow a Toyota shop to repair it. As stated before, I only have 68k miles. "Acceptable" is not my idea of good work. She has been treated with white gloves so I expect the same.

OMG..... :-(. That's terrible damage to your lovely Prius "Spaceship" there, but I'm glad you're okay. That really hurts to look at. It'll likely get totalled, but I hope you can get a replacement Prius as good as that was, or even better.

Methinks, after you've driven a Prius for a while, it becomes very difficult swapping it for a conventional road going vehicle with more.....traditional (read relatively ancient) technology.

But I digress.......your trusty Prius protected you from serious harm, and you're safe - the most important thing to remember :)

Data, Yea it's gonna be hard but I don't have a choice unless a really cheap Prius comes along, like a certified 2010 <60k mi for under 12k with bluetooth and/or gps, lol. I might however go to the dark side, an Insight, lol. I've found a 2012 w/17k mi for 12.5k, but I really want a bumper to bumper warranty :(.

Gee, I am really surprised to hear this! My insurance co waives the deductible as long as -
    1. clearly the other guy's fault, and a rear ender is just that; and
    2. they have all the info: person's name, insurance co name and policy number, police report. The police report will confirm it is the other car's fault, and they will connect with the other ins. co to be sure all the info is accurate; then they waive the deductible.

The auto body shop I use is highly rated in our state, and does all the work for the local Toyota dealership.

Hi Guys! The total repair estimate came to $6800, so it is definitely totaled. They are trying to lowball me, of course, $7600 if I keep it, $8100 if I don't. They had attached some sold comparables but of course it doesn't state what package or any type of description, mine is Pckg #6 with gold emblems. KBB w/out the emblems states $9641 is the fair purchase price, and $9991 as the suggested retail. I got a written estimate from a Toyota dealership on how much it would cost to gold plate, so of course I am gonna ask for that. Not to mention I was without a car for 11 days. So they may backstep once they see all of this, if so I will hit them with diminished value.

I think it's funny that they would list sold comparables with an estimated amount, lol. I'm like if it sold for that amount then go back in time and buy it for me, lol. Last time I checked they are suppose to give you the amount it takes to buy the same car in THIS timeline, not the past one, lol.

Also, I will check around and see what a salvage yard will give me before I sign anything. Thanks guys for all your support! Will let you know what happens!

play hardball, they always hope you'll accept the lowball offers. many do, and they make their fortunes off of them.

Sounds like you are on top of this, good job! Keep up with the research and so on. You may also get 'free' info from YOUR insurance company, they may be a resource for you.

    It's totalled.
You wouldn't want to own a vehicle after that anyways.

Totalled does not mean it can't be repaired. It's that the cost to repair is more than the value of the car. Seems like you could have it repaired and have some money left over.

    FINAL UPDATE

So after the last post I spoke with the adjuster, explaned her prices was were WAY off and explained that they did not include my Pckg #6 in the appraisal, she had the team go back out and re-inspect it. They came back with $9.2k actual value and a total of $10.4k. So I am extremely pleased since I had learned that the insurance company is not obligated to give you retail, but the private sale pricing which was way under $9k. The car has been paid off and now I am just waiting for the remaining amount.

On another note, I am still not happy about my loss of use. The adjuster sent the price of a compact car rental per day and even though I kept explaining that the Prius is not a compact car, she sent the check anyways. So I have yet to cash it and will probably go to small claims over this since the price of a midsize is $40/day vs $18/day for a compact. Wish me luck!

Thank you guys so much for your input!

By the way, I have already purchased a new car. It's not a Prius, Goldie had to have her a/c condenser and compressor replaced totalling $3k. I just can't afford that nor a new hybrid battery so for now I will stick with non-hybrids, but I am staying with Toyota.

    Introducing.......Rose!!!

2008 Toyota Matrix XR 45k mi $11,000 out-the-door with new keys and fobs & window tinting. Tint will be installed tomorrow, just in time for the Florida heat!

I will try to rejoin the world of Prius's in approx. 5 years ;) Hopefully with a Prius V! Take care guys!

Glad to hear everything it starting to work out. Matrix it's an awesome vehicle. I have a 2004 with 190,000 miles and it still going strong pushing MPGs in the 30s. I've had zero issues with it; I've done nothing but oil changes and tires!

That's a fun post because we had a similar recent accident, but ours was not totalled so we never got the used PiP I was looking for. You got a good price that's what I was hoping for too.

Well PiP is for medical care like if you were hurt because of the accident so I don't know what you mean, lol. I am glad I can provide a reference though! Good luck with your repairs!

I think it was about $2750 but we just went to a cheaper place literally in our back yard (after some woods) probably could have been $5000 if we picked a better place (maybe we should have).

Yep, like some dealerships. Well maybe you will get that PiP soon, just not the accident way ;). Take care!

Good luck with your new Toyota Matrix replacement vehicle - it looks quite nice, albeit slughtly unusual. I've never seen one of those before.....is it a Yaris derivative with a wagon like rear attached? I like it :)

I believe that the matrix was based on the corolla. The nice option was AWD in the Matrix. Toyota has discontinued it in favor of its Scion line.

OP: if you had left greater following distance to the shuttle bus in front, you could have decelerated more gradually, and maybe the Cobalt in turn could have avoided you. Or it could have been a minor bumper tap.

This was at night? All the more reason to increase following distance.
