the obsolete oe system just can't do it. you'll need to upgrade.

I had a similar experience when I picked up my Gen 2. I bought a Kinovo BT455 aux adapter that lets me link up 2 phones. Works great and supports the latest Bluetooth Standards like aptx. Just make sure you a ground loop isolator because the Prius has a lot of EMI and the Kinovo isn't particularly well shielded. There is also the BT450 which is a few bucks cheaper but only supports one phone connected at a time. Sorry, can't provide links until I'm a few posts older.

Just get a new deck dude. Crutchfield, for instance, will sell you a deck, plus all the proper installation pieces for about $150. The Kenwood I have has Bluetooth/Pandora/IheartRadio control, plus USB and AUX inputs for charging and better sound quality. Play music, phone calls, or even TV shows! (Hulu in the car anyone? :) ).

I plan on buying a 2006 Prius. Can someone recommend an aftermarket stereo, with bluetooth a2dp, and steering wheel controls for remote bluetooth control of my phone? I want recommendations sure to work, hopefully < $200.

any 2din unit with the features you want will work if you buy the correct adapters. metra axxess is good for keeping your steering wheel controls.
do not buy a car with jbl if audio is important to you. the base system is easier and cheaper to upgrade. if you must have fog lights, hid headlights and leather seats then your gonna have to deal with the $h!++y jbl system. only good thing about it is you get 2 more tweeters and the blue tooth mic in the dome light.

Does it have to be a double din? It would be nice to have the extra cubby hole that the single din models provide with the mounting kit.

It wouldn't have to be 2din, but you'd have to find something to fill the extra space that didn't look like dooky. and anyway, you already have a cubby under the clear cover, 2 glove boxes, a console compartment, and a drawer under your cup holders. ain't that enough?
this is what I had in my '04:

I have a single din, and it doesn't look stupid. No, I don't need extra storage, but single din decks are generally cheaper.

I said "screw it" to the steering wheel controls. That adapter is expensive. The factory JBL amp integration unit is not expensive (at least not on Crutchfield), and was just an extra step in terms of plugging it in. Not as scary as some have suggested.

I do agree that the JBL system as a whole is terrible. I couldn't tolerate mine after 11 months.

that's great news the jbl adapter is cheap. I've been thinkin I'd like to put my kenwood in the '06 but: I'm lazy and I figured it would be an expensive hassle. I hope the metra axxess I had in my '04 will work with the jbl adapter.
