Canada includes Churchill Manitoba, and the US does not.

I see you did not look at the -50 degree record winter temps, by comparison Green Bay's record low is -38. Churchill's average low is -22, Green Bays is -13. (all F)

Note the part where Churchill is at sea level but is above the tree line. There are still trees in Green Bay.

It's amazing how people develop their own protocol, nearly rituals in relationship to oil changes and vehicle maintenance.

    To the OP.

You have a brand new vehicle. Even if the maintenance schedule applied by Toyota seems overly aggressive, at least for it's free "Toyota Care" time period I would recommend following it. Don't think of it as "Maintenance" you think is unnecessary, think of it as maintaining your vehicles warranty.

Once your past the warranty time frame, and "Toyota Care" has expired, then you have little to lose in applying your own protocol to your vehicles upkeep.

Until then I think of it as insurance in case I should happen to have a problem while the car is still covered. However unlikely it might be that something might happen? I don't want to offer any excuse as to why warranty coverage could be denied. Such as NOT changing the oil on the recommended schedule.

I think it's an awkward situation. Toyota has defined the change at the 49th parallel. But my winters, lower mainland BC, are NOTHING like Fargo, North Dakota, lol. When I see a muddle like that, I just cherry-pick the one I like, back off. It's my car, I like the Canadian schedule. It's overkill, but I'm doing it myself, and a day or two later, we walk a few 100 yards down a trail, to the Mr Lube on the highway, give him the spent bottles*, the filter cartridge (tied up in a used nitrile glove) and I pour out my used oil container into their vat.

    * With your "empty" oil bottles, let them stand for a day, then give them a second pour, you'll find an ounce or so extra comes out of each. They are a royal pain for the recyclers, every bit helps.

Both countries see a wide range of conditions that is tough for any manufacturer to decide on whats best for the vehicle. They do have to cater to the lowest (popular) common denominator. The Canadian schedule includes an asterisk for an even more aggressive oil change interval if you take the vehicle off-road or you regularly do short trips (the actual dist is stated but I can't remember it off the top of my head).

I thought I'd seen something too, just poured over the 2010 and 2014 "Owners Manual Supplement", not seeing a shorter oil interval. The US scdedule does have a severe service, basically the same as the Canadian regular interval.

You know, all this talk about our frozen great north: something like 90% of the Canadian population live, and drive, within 100 km's of the US border.

Only thing: I'm all for the Canadian oil change interval. It's the States that's got it wrong, lol.

    I'm assuming you're serious. o_O

Be glad we now live in a time when you don't HAVE TO change the oil and filter after the first 1,000 miles (engine break in period).

Frankly, you want to change the oil at 5K just to ensure any bits floating about are worked out and gone. More so, every 5K you have something you NEED to do (at the very least, rotate/inspect tires and brake discs/pads). The reminder is a nice feature, and you can always reset it if you want to ignore it.

i have a new Honda and its killing me not to chnage it at 5K miles, but Honda and the Honda service manual state NOT to change the oil until the maintenace reminder tells you to, whick can be close to 10K miles. They state the factory uses a special oil additative and needs to stay in the motor for the duration of the first oli change.

The Maintenance Minder right? I'd just abide by it, except no harm in jumping in when its down to 15%, when it starts the warnings.

FWIW, I doubt there's anything special about the factory oil. I have '06 Civic Hybrid Shop Manual, didn't see any mention. Could be different now, but I doubt it.

Well I am trusting Honda as I dont see any reason for them to want to give out bad information. I will just have to trust the Maintenace Minder.....

Sure? I'll take a photo tomorrow. It's not a schedule. It's just a small text box (probably at the bottom of the page).

I don't know. 0W-20 is synthetic oil so in theory, ours is too conservative and the US' schedule is just right. (The higher price of 0W-20 is offset by the longer interval). My smart fortwo used synthetic oil and its maintenance interval is 1 year/15,000km and it's a Mitsubishi engine.
