My 2005 Prius shakes and makes a weird noise when I go to start it up in the morning. This usually only occurs from cold start in the mornings. Once I warm it up for ~2-3 mins all seems to be well. No CEL or anything of that nature. Trying to troubleshoot what the problem is with these cold startups. (76K)

there was a recall for the intake manifold, yours may not be covered though. not to worry.

Was that intake manifold recall for 3G? I don't remember such a recall for 2G.

Regarding the OP's problem, I suggest he look for a minor engine air intake leak. For example, check the tightness of the clamp that secures the engine air cleaner housing to the intake manifold. If any air is entering downstream of the mass air flow sensor and throttle plate, that will cause problems resulting from a lean air/fuel mixture.

If a leak exists, it will be minor since the problem goes away after the engine warms up.

i think you're right. the symptoms sound the same, but probably a different cause. although i think there have been g2 rough start complaints.

I changed my spark plugs ~2 months along with cleaning throttle body and MAF. Lost one of the screws on the MAF (doh!); I will check and see if there are any air leaks as suggested.

Check if the throttle body plate is able to move freely, if it's sticking, that could cause starting issues

What did you use to clean the maf sensor?

Regarding the MAF sensor, make sure the rubber O-ring which seals the sensor to the housing is in good condition. Certainly a missing screw is not helping the goal of an air-tight engine intake system.

Today, I cleaned TB and MAF;TB opens freely. To clean TB I used CRC TB & Air intake cleaner (red can);for MAF I used CRC MAF cleaner (grey can). I also ordered a new MAF that should be arriving tomorrow. After cleaning, I waited a bit for the cleaner to dry out before starting. Upon startup, I did notice a rather rough start as usual when I clean TB. Will update when new MAF comes in.

MAF came in,haven't installed yet. Went for an oil change to today. The mechanic showed me that there was a leak in the axle seal. (Amongst needing new suspension). Shaking at startup due to powertrain issues? Possible low trans fluid?

Oil changed to Mobil1 XP oil and XP filter.

Took it to Toyota for further evaluation today. They listed several items that needed to be taken care of:
    1. Oil in intake manifold that was possibly causing hard starts. Replacing manifold instead of cleaning.
    2. S/W update in regards to a TSB.
    3. Drivebelt starting to crack.
    4. Exhaust flange starting to crack.
Returning the MAF sensor. Thank you to everyone for your support!

My prius has a slightly rough start if the oil isn't all the way to the top dimple on the dipstick. It's odd because it doesn't do that in my sisters Prius even if the oil is half way down the dip stick

Is the intake manifold being replaced because it contains a crack which is leaking unmetered air into the engine?

No. Being replaced it is very dirty. The one option was to attempt to clean it. Excessive oil fills from oil changes had caused this thus leading to the hard starts. They were able to diagnose this through engine codes. (Yet I never had a CEL). If cleaning didnt fix the issue, replacing was next step.

Just about. Got it back from the dealer (temporarily) while I'm waiting for the intake manifold to come in as it has been special ordered.

Also had hybrid battery vent cleaned (never done),as well as PCV valve replaced, front struts replaced as well.

Most of it was much needed maintenance. PCV valve needing to be replaced, front struts had seen better days with potholes and plethora of speed bumps around here, drive belt lasting 10 years(!), hybrid battery vent needing cleaning (I've never had this done),exhaust flange gasket-front donut gasket. Guess I should have been on here sooner.

How well is the car running now, with the other work performed and the original intake manifold still installed?

Since the intake manifold is aluminum, I would think it would be reasonable to remove and clean it instead of replacing.
