All incoming calls showing up as "incoming call from unknown"?

I recently upgraded my phone to the new Galaxy S4 which is running the new Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). I properly synced it to my car (2012 Prius Gen III - Package IV) and refreshed my phone book. Out going calls work fine and I can use voice command to dial by name and all the proper details and picture of my contact show up on the screen. However, if I recieve an incoming call from the same exact contact, it shows up with this message "incoming call from unknown".

Here is the strange part, my old phone (Droid X) had no problems syncing with my car and both incoming and outgoing calls would show the proper contact person on the display screen.

Any ideas? I will try to dealership but my guess is that they will be clueless unless I am lucky enough to get a very tech savvy person helping me.

UPDATE: I just synced my wife's iphone 5 with the car. It works fine with her phone and my old phone so I guess the problem must be with either the new version of Android or perhaps my new phone has a newer bluetooth version that is not syncing properly?

I have the S3, and can't remember if I had this specific issue or not because I first noticed that I had problems with not all the contacts transferring to the prius, and the contacts that did transfer, didn't have all the contacts numbers. I ended up having to edit my contacts in Gmail in order to get them all, and all their numbers transferred. By editing, I had to remove all of the dashes and parenthesis from the phone numbers in Gmail. So, all that I have is just the numbers in all of my contacts in Gmail, example: 0123456789 not 012-345-6789. Strange behavior, but that's what it took for my S3 to sync correctly. Then on the phone, I went to application manager, then all, then contacts storage, forced stop'd, then cleared data, and let Google contacts resync to the phone. Again, I did not notice if I had your issue or not since I was focused on fixing the sync issue.

Long story, but I get proper caller ID on the prius HUD with my S3.

So, maybe you could try one contact to see if the phone number formatting could be the issue because maybe it has to do with the caller ID number the phone is sending to the prius on incoming calls having to match exactly. In the case of my S3, I guess it is just sending the numbers without any preceeding +1 or 1+, dashes, or parenthesis on incoming calls.

Thanks. I am willing to try anything at this point.

Another interesting thing is when the call comes in it displays the message "Incoming Call From Unknown" as if the system has no idea who the caller is. However, when I go into the recent call log on the Prius, the call shows up with the contacts full name so the car does know who the caller is and it is able to link that contact name to that number.

I have a Prius C and my Galaxy S3 worked just fine identifying the call on my dash board screen, but with my new Galaxy S4 it shows unknow calls now. It is frustrating that now it doesn't work.

Yup. I switched out my S4 with an iphone 5 (gasp). I think the S4 must use a different bluetooth protocol that does not quite work well with the latest version Toyota is using. Hopefully they will get it updated sometime soon but I did not want to wait for them.

I originally thought it was an S4 problem but I asked other S4 owners and they did not have any problems sycing it to their cars so my conclusion was it was an S4/Toyota compatibility problem which could take forever to fix if enough people don't complain about it.

So my wife had this problem on her Prius V when we upgraded her from a older HTC EVO phone to the Samsung S4. It was so frustrating to her (as some "long talkers" call and she needs to ignore their call while in the car). I researched the same problem for the HTC One and couldn't find it having the issue. So we went to the Sprint store and returned the S4 and got an HTC One. Well guess what? It has the Unknown caller ID issue too :-( The similarity in the phones is that it too is running Android Jelly Bean. It doesn't seem to be a hardware or Bluetooth issue but rather a Toyota issue about reading the phone numbers from Android and matching the incoming call to those. I am not sure what version of Android introduced the incompatibility but hopefully Toyota will fix this soon since it has been ongoing for some time now.

BTW, we did try having contacts only in google as well as only on the device. We also tried different variants of the phone numbers on the phone (say with spaces or not, ( ) around the area code or not, 1 at the start or not) and never found a combination that worked. It may be that with the contacts on the Prius the Toyota software strips out spaces but the latest android software sends the caller ID with spaces. So nothing we as end-users can do will make it work.

Toyota, please fix this. It only cost us about $100 to try multiple phones, but to get a newer Toyota would cost us thousands so we are not going to do this.

    Thanks,
    David.

Shouldn't this be sent to Toyota as I don't think they read this board? Also, how are we going to get this fixed? USB update?

If you remove the contact list, should the caller number shows up instead.

I have the same problem with NOTE 4, and just tested with Galaxy S6.
I have 2013 Prius and I can confirm that Toyota fix the problem with the 2014 model.

The strange part is: when you on a call and someone from your contact list calling, you will see the name on the dash screen.

I found the issue. The phone number of the incoming calls were in a different format of the stored phone numbers in the contacts.
