Hi! This past weekend some idiot in a red mustang hit my parked 04 prius trying to race and proceeded to try to drive off and when they decided they couldn't get but 300 ft they bailed on their car leaving the keys in the ignition. I need a help assessing the damage. I have full coverage and from what the officer told me they do too, but I don't know what to expect and am worried the company is going to total the car. I just had a factory referbished battery put in for a little over 2500 and it's insured for 3 years. Can anyone with experience tell me if from a glance it looks like they will total it and if so, is there a way to extract and save t he battery?[IMG] [IMG]

Ouch. The good news is that there isn't anything important in the left rear corner. I have no idea if they will total the car but start looking for a replacement. The refurb battery can be a negotiation point with the insurance company but they insured the entire car so if they pay you for it they are entitled to the entire car.

There's one used 2004 for sale "around here" on truecar.com for less than $7400. Start documenting sale prices for 2004s in your area so you'll know if the insurance company is lowballing you.

Your description of the refurbished battery is confusing. Toyota's remanufactured parts have a 1 year unlimited miles warranty and their website doesn't list traction batteries. A new battery from Toyota is going to have that same 1 year warranty so who's factory rebuilt your pack?

If the damage is more then the blue book value for repair. It will be consider total lost. From looking at it. Don't think they going to claim that. Since it is a hit and run. The law go against you. You insurance rate will go up. People with fake driver license and insurance. If they get caught. The only fine is $500 and they walk away if they don't have insurance. From there you have to get a lawyer to sued them which take forever. Lame law if you ask me.

Well we know the owner of the car, and by that I mean the police do since the vehicle was left on site with the owner not in the vehicle.

hit and run. shouldn't affect your insurance rates. sounds like the owner was high and didn't want to get a dwi or else the car was stolen. stay in touch with police and document everything. if the insurance company doesn't total it, make sure they pay for genuine parts, not the cheapest knock off aftermarket junk they can find.

Holly xxxx! You paid $2500 for a "refurbished" battery w/ a 3 year warranty. You do realize refurbished/rebuilt/reconditioned/used batteries are made up of 28 modules that come from various other Prius, and then Frankenstein assembled into one working pack.

The chances for the greatest longevity and trouble free operation would be with a NEW HV Battery, not a refurbished. Don't make that mistake again.

You could have purchased a 100% BRAND NEW HV Battery from a Toyota Dealer that sell online: $2100-$2400. You just have to find a dealer that's near you, and confirm that they will sell one to you, as some PC members have reported issues. Many dealers honor other dealer parts coupon discounts; there are 20% & 15% off retail parts coupons.

As for insurance outcome. My money is on them totaling the car. Each insurance company's has different threshold amounts (40%-50%), but generally the closer the repair comes to 50% of the car's value (usu based on Kelly Blue Book), they just cut you a check and sell your former car at auction.

EDIT: My personal general rule of thumb is paint is minimum of $1k. Parts and labor will make the repair bill skyrocket.
