    Hi everyone,

Today noon time, to avoid a snake on the road, my P2 was hit by rear car, a Chevrolet silverado, The Chevrolet hit my bike rack on the rear, and broke the "low?" rear window. The Grille of Chevrolet was broken, but all others are fine.

We left each's phone number, took pictures for each's driver license, insurance card, and damage area. but there is no mobile phone signal (in about 20 miles), so we left and go back to home.

I'd like to know, what shall I do next step:

    1. shall I call Chevrolet's insurance company to confirm the driver's status?
    2. shall I call my insurance company?
    2. will this accident increase my premium, thus not worth to tell insurance company?

I would report it ASAP to the police department that has jurisdiction in that area and ASAP to your insurance company. Get a copy of the police report. How do you know someone in the other vehicle decided they were hurt and went to the ER? You have to protect yourself. Just my opinion. Do what you like.

every state is different. here, we just report to our insurance co. they go after the other company, and it eliminates the deductible.

Anyone know how much does this rear window cost?

I'm living in KY, (the accident happened in KY too), and the law said:"If the accident results in injuries, death, or at least $500 damage to vehicles and/or property, you'll need to give the Kentucky State Police a call so a trooper can come by. "

And also, it said, Kentucky is a "choice no-fault" state, is that to say, I just need call my insurance company?

mass is a no fault state, but i'm not sure what 'choice' means. why not call a glass company or toyota for a price, and if it's over $500. call the police.

Usually, the car which is behind in a rear impact accident is responsible for causing the accident. However, as the driver in front, I suggest you carefully assess whether it was worth saving the snake in exchange for risking serious damage to you and your passengers as a 5,000+ lb vehicle strikes your Prius from behind.

You should report the accident to your insurance company and this should not increase your premium assuming the other driver's insurance company steps up to paying for the damage.

Deal with this all the time....

    1) No police department will want to hear from you about this. They will almost always tell you to leave them alone. There are a few -- very few -- that will take a report.

    2) Call the other driver's insurance company. Leave your company out of it for now. If the other company tells you to contact your own company, then contact your company. Otherwise, do not.

    3) Have "your story" down totally before calling the insurance people. They will record you and you only get one chance to tell the true, correct story. If you screw it up, it can come back to haunt you.

Thanks Patrick. Sometime you just see something alive in the road, and want to save it by intuition... next time, I think I will not save a snake again.

The low rear window, you mean the plastic one below the larger glass on the hatch? If this is the one, make sure the shop uses NEW rubber seal grommets or improvises by getting some rubberized weatherstripping tape at a big box store. There was a story not to long ago of an unusual water entry via failed seals from a poor hatch glass replacement. If the plastic hatch window needs replacing, the rear hatch spoiler will have to come off, and the seals will likely need replacing. See this thread to understand why, as the pictures make it clear as day: Huge water leak in back of 2004 Prius | PriusChat

That being said, I bet the impact probably created cracks or widened the existing cracks near the hatch hinge/roof black strip.
Sadly, these hatch cracks develop with enough regularity.

Thanks for your suggestion, that window below the larger glass on the hatch is not a plastic one, but after reading your link, I do need pay attention to the potential water leaking problem.
