There was a case of a woman drinking too much water and died as a result (lungs filled up with water). It certainly was a surprise to me that even water could poison someone.

Sugars as the root of evil is a canard. Fat and sedentary is the epidemic.

The usual complication is electrolyte imbalance.

not true. the US obesity and diabetes epidemic got out of hand when people followed government propaganda of low fat diet. remember the (now discontinued) food pyramid?

eating fat doesn't make you fat. educate yourself how scientists produce fatty livers in rats or what farmers use to fatten animals before slaughter.

Just eat right, exercise regularly, and keep your fingers crossed that your genes don't double-cross you in the end. (y)

Thanks, but I am reasonably educated.

You are conflating calorie source with that other problem of TOO MUCH

    Actually?

Most of it is sloth, but portion control is the key caloric problem whether the calories are from sugar or fat.
I remember in the 60's and 70's everything HAD to be sugar-free, resulting in some very unfortunate sugar substitutes.
Then the Vegies weighed in and in the 80's and 90's animal fat was the scapegoat, and everything had to be fat-free.

Beer is both sugar free(*) and fat-free, but I wouldn't recommend it as a diet staple, if you know what I mean.

(*) Whenever I make that anaolgy, some buzz-kill dietician always pops out of the weeds and grumbles about maltose/fructose, and the alcohol-sugar thing.
    Yeah, right.

That damn food pyramid. If only the country had eaten more McDonalds and less fruits and veggies, the obesity epidemic would never have happened!

    Oh, wait. Never mind.

Sorry for quoting myself, I want to clarify that by 'fat' I mean obese.

In terms of human physiology and biochemistry, sugars, fats and alcohols are all stored as fat when intake exceeds energy requirements. America's problem is that the energy depot is rarely debited.

no, i'd be better off not starting. funny thing is, i eat very healthy meals. yogurt fruit and granola in the morning, salad with some protein for lunch, weight watchers dinner. then i struggle, 8 oz. of red wine with (low fat) pretzels before dinner, another glass with dinner and about 15 kisses before bed. mostly boredom.

    Wine is surprisingly high calorie.
IIRC alcohol is about 6 Calories per gram, so 500 ml is some 50 grams, thus 300 Calories if wine is 10% v/v Etoh

this is a huge oversimplification. the old calories = calories no matter what source is wrong. plenty of literature and resources on that if you bother to search.

it's not even the type of food/drink but also time of day (or night) one eats that matter.

What is the viewpoint here? Does human biochemistry actually change over the day? (If a person changes into a Werewolf at full moon, I can see where the whole-sheep diet is time dependent).

i've heard that eating in the evening doesn't metabolize as well or something. probably why i can't lose this gut. what's the old saying? eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch, and a queen for dinner.

It is over time of day in that most of us sleep at night. Eating before bed means that the recently digested carbs can't be put to use right away for energy. So they get stored in the liver as glycogen, or converted fat. The next day, the body will use any sugars and starches eaten for breakfast for energy. It will only use the stored energy of the night time snack once all those sources are expended.

I'll not try to dissuade you from your convictions, but can we agree that exercise and being thin are good things (tm) ?

And if you are fat despite your convictions, then here is a free bit of advice before I leave this thread: EAT LESS, MOVE MORE
