Has anyone successfully replaced their 12V auxiliary battery with an alternate to the OEM battery that also has the smart key option? For some reason Toyota has 2 part numbers, 28800-21171, w/o smart key and 28800-21171, w/ smart key. I found a lot of battery threads but none that addressed the smart key option, thanks in advance.

Do you know which aftermarket battery or batteries work with the smart key option?

Amazon has many options and they are great when you need warranty replacement.

exide batteries used to suck. stick with oem or optima, though some folks don't like optima either.

The difference between with or without smart key is the case size. I replaced my gen 2. 12v (w/o smart key) with the optima . It is the same case size as the (w/smart key) battery. So you should not have any installation issues.

DS46B24R. it's not the quickest job to do but it is fairly straight forward. I'm sure there are YouTube videos that show the process.

Since your car has SKS, you really should get the larger capacity battery. SKS places a larger constant drain on the 12V battery, than a non-SKS car, unless the SKS function is turned OFF. SKS cars came standard w/ a 45Amp-hr, 12V battery. NON-SKS cars came w/ a 35Amp-hr, 12V battery. The larger battery would have more reserves, to possibly survive a light being left n accidently: map light, overhead cabin light, trunk light, etc.

Dealer pricing aspect, the larger battery will be cheaper than the smaller battery.

After 13 years of faithful service my 12v finally died. Mechanic sent me to O'Reilly Auto parts and they sold me a platinum super start which they said was compatible with my 2005 Prius on 8-1-18. I bought it and installed it at the store and all good until Feb.2019 when car needed a jump. So being an optimist I took the replacement battery in and exchanged it. Then on 6-18-19 same thing and replaced at a different location of OReilly's auto parts. Fast forward to July 7, 2019 got the message there is a problem! with the red triangle of death. This time Traction battery code came up. After replacing both the Hybrid and 12v (OEM) I was told the O'Reilly Super Start Platinum Prius battery was incompatible with my non SKS Gen 2 Prius? Mechanic said those batteries were frying my HV battery over the past 11 months and were the culprit as I have never had a problem with the car in the electrical department. Just trying to warn other Prius owners of this dilemma I have been going through. A lot of wasted time, worry, and money because of incompatible battery option. There website lists this battery as "Fits 2005 Prius" & on another search "Does Not fit 2005 Prius" and going deeper to product specific page it also lists as "Does Not fit 2005 Prius"? (See below Screen shots) Very unprofessional and confusing to the inexperienced person looking to an established company for help. This is the only issue I've ever had with O'Reilly's Auto Parts and the employee's are the best at helping you out. Now I am stuck with a financial burden of a useless 12v battery and the bill of a replacement Traction battery that was killed at 150000 miles. I knew the day would come just wish faulty equipment was not the culprit. upload_2019-7-29_9-3-23.png upload_2019-7-29_9-3-23.png Screen Shot 2019-07-28 at 8.55.52 PM.png upload_2019-7-29_9-3-23.png Screen Shot 2019-07-28 at 8.55.52 PM.png

    welcome!

unfortunately, the mechanic is wrong. i would not go back there.

you're hybrid battery likely died a normal death after 14 years or so. nothing unusual about that.

i hope you bought new oem 12v and hybrid batteries, as your car should go another 150,000 miles or 14 years, whichever comes first.

i just put a new toyota tru start 12v in after seven years. $200. plus tax, i don't think it's a bad investment.

    all the best!(y)

I have never understood the mania to buy an aftermarket 12v.

I am probably one of the most frugal peope you might meet, but it makes no sense to me to stress over an aftermarket tbat may orf may not fit and may or may not do the job.

The few that are proven to work, mostly, are about $20=$30 less than the Toyota and the Toyota has a better warranty.

i could have saved 50 bucks at pep boys if i ordered on line and picked up at the store, but the location is a hassle, and i'm not as frugal on some things as others.

Your mechanic is an idiot. The 12 volt battery had nothing to do with your traction battery failure. The statement actually scares me he’s so wrong. You can use a SKS battery in a non SKS car by changing one part, the battery tray. You use part # 74440-47020 instead of the installed part 74440-47010

    I completely agree.

The "does not fit" part might be the physical dimensions – if you compare those. I see nothing in the actual important specs that would say does not fit (as in incompatible).

Is it possible for you take photos of the battery and post? I am wondering if the battery is still made by GS Yuasa in Japan; in which case paying a moderate cost premium would be worth it (in my opinion); or if the battery is now being produced in Mexico (in which case maybe not, again in my opinion.)
    Thanks!
