In the short term that sounds logical. But is the total long-term situation changed or unchanged? Specifically, if someone eats "X" amount of energy over a month and expends "Y" amount of energy over the same month, what happens to the X-Y difference between the nighttime focused eater and the breakfast focused eater?

I think you can see my general question. If everything is identical other than when the calories are consumed, what accounts for an X-Y difference over a month? If it is a more inefficient path to convert to glycogen/converted fat and then back to energy, it would seem the night eater has less X-Y being carried around after a month.

it has been studied before. people gained wait when they ate mostly in PM vs the control group who ate mostly in AM (identical diet) who lost wait. the difference is in base metabolism.

Dr. Fuhrman is right on with regard to sugar. I think the proper amount of sugar is zero isolated sugars. Anything more than that is a burden that reduces health and longevity. So you can eat sugar cane, but process it to isolate the sugar and you've got an unhealthy substance.

If you think Dr. Fuhrman is extreme, check out Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Dr. Esselstyn is a preventive cardiologist who handles the worst of the worst cardiology cases. People told by their cardiologists to get their affairs in order end up recovering their health and living another 20+ years. The treatment is a plant based diet consisting of mostly green leafy vegetables, whole grains, legumes, other vegetables, and abstention from any isolated oils. Now that I think of it, there don't even seem to be any fruits in his diet. I suspect that he regards apples and bananas as simply too high in sugar for people so sick that they have to see him.

Search YouTube for "Dr. Esselstyn.wmv" for an excellent presentation on his program. Fair warning, it's about 2 hours.

agree, fruits are not as healthy as generally assumed. especially apples contain huge amounts of fructose. as we discussed above, fructose seems to be the worst offender. i noticed myself i had a few gout attacks after eating apples. i searched literature and sure enough fructose is known (mostly to scientists, not to MDs) to increase uric acid a lot.

this is a bit off topic, but most MDs are really behind in anything related to chronic diseases. i suspect because medical/pharma industries generally benefit from not curing those conditions, but providing symptomatic treatments, that is basically profit for the life of patient. my wife is a new grad practitioner in the geriatric field and she is appalled by the huge extent of poly-pharmacy, 10-20 medications are not uncommon. the funniest thing is, some patients are in so bad condition, they are sent to hospice to die, but as soon as most meds are DC'd, they feel better and refuse to die.

now, before anyone accuses me about anti-MD bias, i'm MD myself, just don't see patients in my line of work.

i think they like to cure them if possible, with drugs, but who is responsible for prevention?

Doctor Sagebrush please do some recent research.
Sugar causes coronary disease , not cholesterol.
Cholesterol medications are purely Big Pharmaceuticals rip off.
The meds lower your cholesterol, so you will have great low cholesterol levels when you have a heart attack or stroke.
Its the biggest rip off in history.
BTW the scientific consensus has been wrong on the matter for as long as Ive been eating.
    So much for scientific consensus.

OK I see you are saying obesity.
But obesity is a symptom of high sugar consumption.
The current science says that sugar in your blood scars the arteries .Cholesterol builds up on the wound to cure it.
Current science says sugar is the cause of disease not cholesterol.
    Obesity is a side effect.
High fat consumption doesnt cause obesity. As in the Atkins diet.

Your understanding of obesity and atherosclerosis are on par with your understanding of climate change.

No doubt though, the recent dietary task force has caused a lot of confusion, particularly in the susceptible. Atherogenic LDL cholesterol is a package of lipoproteins, cholesterol, and saturated fats. If any component is unavailable, it becomes the limiting factor. This is easy to reproduce in the laboratory or in short term diet studies but it is not relevant to balanced, reasonable diets.

If you eat a high cholesterol diet, you in all likelihood will also be eating a diet high in saturated fat and atherosclerosis WILL develop. The converse may not be true, as epidemiology of Asian diets demonstrate.

Obesity is due to excess calories.

There's a whole lot of often overlooked words in that article.
Such as "Prolonged", "Repeated" and "Diabetic".

My feeling is sugar in high doses, for prolonged periods and repeatedly isn't good for anyone.

But sugar in moderation? Is something the healthy human body can deal with.

The American diet IMO does offer way too much potential exposure to a lot of substances that can be bad if consumption is abused.

Went into the local quickie convenience mart the other day, and they had a insulated refillable "cup" you could buy to use at their soda fountain.

    100 ounces.

    It was a BUCKET.

If you're drinking that everyday? You might have a problem.

not too mention numerous environmental issues, which we have little to no control over.

    OK :)

Let's say just half of your daily wine consumption is the daily excess -- meaning 150 C a day.
Over a year that is 54,750 Calories.
Since it takes about 9 C/gram to store fat, that extra glass of wine is 6 Kg a year.

Or if you flip it, if your waist and weight are constant, cutting out a glass of wine a day while everything else remains constant will lead to 6 Kg weight loss a year.

yup, this the stuff taught in medical schools way back in 1970-80'.
hence the past recommendations to eat margarine (transfats!) rather than butter.
same with the low fat (=high carbohydrate) diet that gave people obesity and diabetes.
totally discredited now. please go back and educate yourself on more current views on the subject.
for a starter, read the studies on the dietary practices of Inuit tribes before westernization (ie high fat/high protein diet) and the remarkable lack of cardiovascular disease vs the impact of the current low fat/high carbohydrate diet and the rampant obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular deaths in the same population.

i wish it were that easy. if i cut something out, i must make up for it somewhere else. the only thing that has ever worked is a strict diet like weight watchers. but when i reach my goal, i put the weight right back on. this has been happening for 40 years. my doc says i'm better off where i am, than to keep yo-yoing.

our weight (like height) is hard wired in our genes. while it's easy to gain weight by overeating, it's hard to lose weight due to metabolism slowing down when starving.
now, short term intermittent fasting 12-24 hrs has huge health gains though.
