I have a favor to ask, can someone with a 2012 (or any year) v check the area just under the third tail light to see if there is a seal of some sort which I'm missing, or is it just open?

I have a small leak of some sort in my hatch, but only when it rains very hard. I've only had it happen a few times since I had work done about 2 yrs ago. So it has been intermittent at best I wasn't able to trace it back to it's source. But today with it raining pretty hard I think I finally know where it's coming from.

I pulled the interior panel down, and it had some water in it, but the panels on the sides were still dry. It's hard to see but if you look where the white wire is coming from there is a foam grommet that looks/feels a bit wet. And this is the only opening I can see where water could be getting in.

Now I noticed on the outside near this area is an opening just below the third brake light which has nothing in it.

Can someone check to see if there should be something plugging this hole? I'm wondering if the place who worked on my car back then forgot to put the stopper back in place. Or is this supposed to be open to the elements?

    Thanks for any help.

There should be an accordion pleated wire cover with a grommet at each end (sealing hatch and opening in top/rear chassis) in the space between the hatch and top/rear chassis

If I'm understanding correctly, I think both of those are in place. if you look at the first picture, its kinda hard to see but there are two of the accordion covers going from the hatch to the top of the chassis.

But there is no grommet behind the trim piece (removed in the first picture) where the white wire come through into the hatch in the bigger cut out. But looking through this cut out there is a smaller hole that has some type of foam grommet where the wire comes though from the outside, but not a full rubber one that would prevent water getting in. Should there be? Or should there be some form of grommet on the outside just below the third brake light?

    Thanks for the help

That does not look right. Probably something lost when you had work done. You never should have a wire come through bare metal opening.

Here's our reg Prius, different, but just for example.

Thanks for the picture, but those two are still present, if you look in my first picture you can see them below the area with the white wire, its hard to see though.

The white wire is within the hatch itself and usually covered by the interior trim piece (which I removed). Where the white wire comes through the metal further back there is a small foam grommet, but nothing in the big opening. I agree something is missing, just don't know what exactly, hopefully someone with a v can clue me in.

    Thanks again

My 2012 Prius v with Adv. Tech. Pkg. looks the same as yours without the plastic trim.

The hole on the outside is where windshield washer fluid to squirt onto rear window.

Maybe the gasget around the windshield washer squirted is compromised behind the spoiler.

It may be the washer seal issue. Does it get worse when you spritz?

Thank you very much Chazz8, that's what I was looking for! And sadly it looks the same as you said. I'm still pretty confident that the small hole where the white wire is coming through is where the water is coming through.

Any ideas (for anyone out there) on how to remove the rear spoiler? So I can check to see if a gasket is compromised? I see two bolts holding it on from the inside.

    Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for the picture, those are still in place. I haven't noticed anything when using the washer, and I just went out and checked with the hatch down, and open with the washer running and there is no water/fluid coming through anywhere.

I've only seen the issue when it's raining for a long time or heavy rains. Since it looks the same as @Chazz8 's I may just have to pull the spoiler off to see if something is missing or a gasket is compromised.

    Thanks again

    Current update-

Well I tried to remove the rear spoiler, I removed those bolts from the inside, then tried to pop the spoiler off. Didn't quite make it, but the center section popped up a bit, just not all the way, and the ends stayed pretty tight. I didn't want to break it so I popped the center section back down and secured the bolts on the inside.

We had some long and heavy rain the other day and I was expecting to find some water in the interior trim, but when I popped it off it was dry :). So fingers crossed, maybe I somehow reseated what ever gasket is in there. Hopefully that actually fixed it... Only time will tell :)
