    hello all,

My prius 2008 94k miles makes this strange noise from time to time, randomly. Does anyone know what it might be?

apologies if this has already been talked about.

how long does it go on for? is it when you first power up, or?

can you locate it? front, back, etc. under the hood? right/left?

    welcome to priuschat btw!

i'm thinking the brake canister, that makes the buzzing noise when you first open the drivers door?

The sound is for like 3 minutes and it occurs about once every three days while driving or at end of day when I turn off car for the night.

If you are inside the prius, the sound appears to be coming in from around the steering wheel area. It seems whatever is making the sound is like bottom left from steering wheel. Thanks for the welcome!

you want to first check if you have enough coolant in your radiator cooling system. If it's low, it can cause the valve to stick

update* I went to hybrid mechanic and he said nothing is wrong... that if it were, I would've gotten a code. He also said coolant levels were fine. Still makes that noise once in a while. Asking for your advice, should I insist on mechanic having a deeper look?

my 04 made the same noise and stopped after replacing the 12 volt battery...
I thought it was coolant pump cycling but I never figured it out..
remove the battery and have it tested and charged, see if the noise goes away
I have told not to charge the battery while connected to the car

The problem starts off intermittent, probably why it went away for a while. But a new 12v won't solve it. If it's really bad, it'll throw a code.

There shouldn't be a problem with charging the battery while it's connected to the car.
