when is someone going to build a hybrid sedan from the ground up with a decent trunk?

Reviews say that the 2016 Sonata does, because they put the battery down low where the spare should be. That means there is no room for a spare tire :(

When they sell enough of the current sedan hybrids to create enough demand.

hmm, i think i would rather have the spare. we use the hycam for long trips, i wouldn't want to be in the middle of nowhere with nospare. that's why they need a redesign.

but that's part of what's holding them back. someone needs to take the bull by the horns. probably won't happen until gas prices go up again. hopefully there's some r&d going on tho.

From the few photos I've seen, the Malibu hybrid does the same.

I think the Prius has left peoples expectations high on more than one feature of a hybrid.
If there were a ICE version of it that did nothing to the rear suspension, how much cargo space would the car gain with the battery removed? Most people came from a sedan in the US to the Prius. The cargo flexibility of a hatchback is a new thing to them, but the Prius has a shallow floor, under floor compartment to non-hybrid hatchbacks.

Anyone know what the comparable Sonata ICE cost is to calc the extra hybrid cost?

The Lexus 250 hybrid sedan before the CT also had the flat floor. Don't know about split seat.

Under Australian testing, it's 48mpg combined (for reference, the Prius is listed as 60mpg combined and the Camry Hybrid at 46mpg). Scale it to EPA numbers, that's putting it very close to the Camry's EPA numbers of 40mpg.

HS250h? That had no folding rear seats at all. It also had the battery in the same place as the Camry Hybrid (behind the back seats). The IS300h has the battery in the spare tire well so the trunk looks completely normal.

13.3 cubic feet for that sonata. even more for the Lish (though not sold in america). I don't think trunk space is really a problem for the hybrid. PHEV is 9.9 cubic feet which is not really that bad considering.

cd is down to 0.24 same as the tesla model S, and slightly lower than the prius.

Reviewers aren't getting the mpg they should compared to epa, which may be the hybrids biggest problem.

How well the phev sells may be up to pricing. This looks like a better 4 sedan phev than the fussion energi

the problem is when people compare hybrid to non hybrid. the trunk size is a big factor for some/many. even we considered it carefully, and we're more devoted to mpg's than the average buyer.

and if you take away the spare, you're just changing it to another problem. we really need a new sedan, with no non hybrid option, like prius.

My brother bought a gen I camry hybrid. I'm not sure if that is what you have, but 10.6 cubic feet. He hasn't really had a problem. The sonata hybrid is much bigger at 13.3 cubic feet, as are those in the current gen II fusion and camry hybrids.
