Response of the Day: Japan Accepts America's Challenge for a Robot Duel - The Daily What

Yeah, so it's not quite Avatar/Mechwarrior/Pacific Rim/Gundam style mecha battle, but it's still kind of interesting. I would so totally watch this, just because it's giant robots (well, technically mechs/mecha as they're piloted inside a cockpit as opposed to someone controlling it from the outside via a remote) duking it out.

And like many have joked in the comments, it's a really bad idea challenging Japan to a fight like this. They eat, live, and breathe this stuff thanks to anime, games, and manga (japanese comics). So not only will they likely win, their mecha will be more awesome looking too.

Why exactly do we need giant robots?

Didn't you see "Pacific Rim"? We have to be ready just in case.

i think it's cool! but robert downey jr needs to be involved somehow. after the women's soccer embarrassment, i wouldn't want to get in the way of kuratas. either way, the transformer fans will be engrossed. i like japans idea of punching, and not just shooting. go mark II!(y)

Haha, in real life a mecha wouldn't be very practical due to vulnerabilities to their legs. Damage or destroy one of those and it's probably a sitting duck, unless it's one that has multiple legs like a spider.

Yes, they could cover rough terrain better than a vehicle, but the enemy would probably put a ton of landmines in a suspiciously cleared out section to bait you into entering that kill zone.

And unless your plan is to completely level the city, the mechs would be also handicapped in street to street fighting. Then again, if you're going to destroy everything anyway, just send a bunch of bombers, or lob hundreds/thousands of artillery shells/rockets into the area.

Fortunately in fiction, we can get away with that stuff thanks to this trope:

Rule of Cool - TV Tropes

Probably helps explain why "Jurassic World" did so well in theaters too.

Here's a quick 30 second trailer from Gundam Wing, probably one of the better known anime depicting mecha outside of Japan. Notice how many times they use flashy melee weapons to finish off the bad guys, whereas the bad guys with huge cannons firing 105mm tank shells barely put a dent in them.

"It's a Gundam!" - Famous last words of a lot of bad guys.

that was a disappointing movie for me, i thought the storyline and dialog was terrible. and some of the acting too, but that may have been due to the script. i realize most people loved it.
and i suppose some of the disappointment is sequels in general.
