I surprisingly ran through 30k miles in 15 months. So I have the option to extend my warrantee from 36 months 36,000 miles to either

    1. $1450 for 5 years and 100,000 miles
    or
    2. $1800 for 6 years and 125,000 miles.

So-- the question is -- do you think it is worth it? Will I likely have over $1400 or $1800 in repairs that might be covered by the standard warranty in the next 70-95k miles?

There are plenty of debates on warranties. Search and take your chances. Odds are in your favor without a warranty since most Hybrid components have a long coverage period and maintenance items like your 12v battery are not covered regardless. However...

If I were going to buy the warranty I would buy the max miles (125k) with shortest years based on your driving. I would find one of the two or three Toyota dealers who will sell the genuine Toyota warranty over the phone and send you the paperwork. Probably get the 125k mile warranty for something like $1200.

I wouldn't do it. You must be putting on lots of highway miles which are much easier than city miles. Also your drive train must have a 6 year 60,000 miles warranty.....that's off the top of my head. If you ever read consumer reports, they always tell you not to do warranties; they're money makers for the companies. That's why they are always trying to get you to purchase them.

I just bought my '12 Prius 3 35k miles, I did get the 4 yr/55k mile maintenance plan, 7 yr/125k mile warranty. Like an idiot after a purchase. Was this a bad move? I do drive 40k miles a year for work, with at least 30-40 engine on/off times in a day. Does warranty start at the year and mileage that you bought the car used or it starts from year made (2012) and zero mileage? It's my understanding that the prius get's an oil change every 10k miles. My maintenance warranty cost $700, oil changes are $100 I'm assuming? With my driving, the warranty paid off on itself yes?

If I knew the relative cost structures on the "dark side of the moon" I might be able to answer oil change cost effectiveness of your maintenance contract. But since you are a cagey one, then I can only add the warranty date and time starts from 2012 and zero mileage. So it will take you a little over 2 years to exceed 125k on the odo.
