I would be shipping my 2010 Toyota Prius to Africa in a few days. It takes approximately a month to get there. Any advice on what to do to have the car still running on arrival esp to prevent the batteries from going dead?

Difficult, because to and from the ship it will be driven and possibly mishandled. I went to Europe for 2 months and first charged both battery systems, I then disconnected the HV disconnect switch.. When I returned everything was fine. But I was in total control. And I was confident the battery charges would sustain. The stevedores that oversee, move, park, etc cannot be trusted to be knowledgable about the Prius, plus they have a penchant for playing the radios, etc, when bored. Your unfortunately handing over total control to the irresponsible. I wish you luck. You may be able to buy insurance for any malfeasance. Wish you luck.

So you think 30+ days on the sea without a charge is okay?

    car will be dead..

How can you protect? The stevedores must move the car.

it's the 12v that is a concern. if you can't do anything about it, pack a booster pack/charger that plugs into african juice.

I'm not worried about the HV battery, just the 12V. Disconnect the neg terminal. Hopefully everything will be okay.

Plan to have a 12V booster pack with you to start the car as the 12V battery will probably be dead upon arrival. I assume your car is not going to be the first one being unloaded with a dead battery so the dock presumably will have a procedure to deal with that.

A major problem will be caused if the person jumpstarting the car reverses the polarity of the jump cables, as that may destroy the inverter.

Are you moving to Africa and bringing the car with you permanatly or are you taking an extended trip/ vac or something of the sort where renting a Veh. Once you get there is an option?

Renting might save you some headaches and worries and money, that is unless this is a permanent move and then disregard my question..

    Where in Africa?

    :)

I know for a fact that the local toyota dealer does not sell prius, but there are a few shops around that service the few prius in town. I would try as much as possible with the help of this forum to do my own servicing.

Well then, I suggest that you start by subscribing to techinfo.toyota.com and downloading the repair manual sections for your model year to the extent that you are comfortable performing those repairs.

I'm not sure how the Gasoline purity is in Ghana, but we did have a member here from Nigeria that had issues with local gas and pretty much wrecked his spark plugs.

Might want to consider running a bottle of fuel additive to each tank if at all concerned....
