When I just barely press on the brakes am I increasing regenerative braking without engaging the mechanical brakes? If so, how hard can I press before the mechanical brakes engage? Is there a good way to tell when they do?

Yes you are correct. If you want just hydraulic brakes, put the car in neutral. That way, you will see how good or bad your normal brakes are functioning.

This is also a great way to clean the rust from the rotor, especially after a rainy drive.

    LG-D851 ?

the only way to know is hook up a scan gauge from the prius shoppe. genIII has built in display. suffice it to say 90% of normal braking, the pads never touch the rotors.

FYI, I am at 11 years and 155000 miles and I am still on the original brake pads. The only thing I notice is maybe a little more brake pedal travel. The fluid level in the reservoir is negligible.

What a car! I have even thought about changing the pads but why? It still stops like new. Don't mess with success.

    LG-D851 ?
