I recently had my oil changed in my 2007 Prius. A few days later I had intermittent issues with hesitation or jerking of the engine. This only happened a couple of times in a few days, then one day it happened and was worse, the check engine light came on. I took it to a parts store for diagnosis and got codes p0300 and p0301. I also discovered they had put 10w30 oil in and 4 quarts instead of the recommended weight and amount for my car. I was told the overfill could have caused my problem. I contacted the shop that did the oil change, they didn't think is was overfilled enough to matter, but they drained it, etc. I didn't have the problem again for 2 days, then it started again and the check engine light came back on. Should I not drive the car until I get this figured out, they cannot get it into the shop for two days.

How many quarts did they put inthe crankcase? If they added 4 qts. they overfilled it.

When I change my oil, I fill the filter with fresh oil until the bubbling stops. Then I add 3 qts. to the engine. This brings the level midway between full and low.No problems so far, in ten going on eleven years of changing my own oil.

They did put 4 quarts in and it was a little bit above the full dimple on the dipstick. I drove it this morning and it isn't hesitating or "jerking" as bad as it was, but still does it a little. Engine light is still on. They are wanting to say I have a coil issue, etc. but it wasn't doing any of this until a day or so after the oil change. They did drain it and put in a new oil filter, etc.

Thanks Viv59. Amazing isn't it when people could just do their job. They would have never overfilled it in the first place.

Look at all the time wasted simply because the guy who changed your oil didn't put the correct weight and then overfilled it to boot.

The P0300 code is Random Misfire. P0301 is misfire on Cylinder 1. This is where they are getting the coil issue.

how many miles on it? it could simply need a set of spark plugs. I had a plug fail with about 100k on it, replaced the plugs and the misfire went away. no coils needed. 4 quarts of oil isn't gonna cause a misfire.

I have never heard of plug failure. Coils "can" fail or fire intermittently. If this Prius was pumping oil past the rings wouldn't it show as a P0300 and the weakest coil/plug would be #1 with P0301.
Those iridium tipped plugs used in a Prius will spark until the gap is huge or gas/oil fouled. I have seen one Prius during the winter that started, quit then tried to restart and ran awfully. The plugs were gas fouled and couldn't be cleaned. Four new plugs and it was alive again. Once we got the fuel burned out of the catalyst it was returned to its owner.

plugs definitely can fail. doesn't happen a lot, but I've seen it on other cars too. a lot of guys with old Harleys won't run champion plugs cause they misfire. and you ain't going too far on 1 cylinder.

Prius uses ND or NGK spark plugs. I have seen Champion plugs fall apart, but I haven't seen one of these totally fail ( before you start typing, yes. Spark Plugs can fail but it happens from another cause usually; engine ovetheat, valve sticks and piston runs into valve causing plug to get hit, actually the center of the plug pops out ). Failure can happen but not very often.

When the spark plug failed on your Prius, what happened? I change mine about every 50k miles because I have seen what happens when plugs are left in the cylinder head too long (believe me its not pretty).

Okay...the shop that originally overfilled my oil did drain and redo with the right weight and amount. Scan still showed code p0300 even though the check engine light had gone off. They did some checking on it today, coil pack and spark plug for cylinder one was full of oil and they said the valve cover gasket was bad. My question is could the overfill have caused this to happen ?

sure, the higher pressure probably blew it out. wow, how much did they put in there?

My manual with my car says only use 3.2 quarts. My car was running good, getting about 48-50 mpg before the oil change. I have read where even a small amount of overfill can cause a lot of issues in a Prius. I am going to be out $300 for all of this to be fixed...ugh.

Idiots, charge it back to them. There is a difference between knowing and not knowing.
The extra oil found the weakest link and went through the gasket. Its not uncommon to have a valve cover gasket leak, it's just that the engine has a very good neoprene style gasket that holds back lots of oil for a while.
