Is it common to get some trade-in allowance for used tires with decent tread? Just never heard of that, maybe more common in the States? It's commendable, keeping tires on the road longer.

I'm not sure how common the practice is. I do know that America's Tire likes to keep some tires in decent shape around to use as "loaners" if a customer has to wait for a particular tire to come in. I'm not sure if that particular company sells used tires or not. I do think any trade-in value is up to the local managers and their relationship with the particular customer. I've been dealing with them for well over 25 years. The same company is also known as Discount Tire.
Here in California we've had recycling fees and tire disposal fees added on for quite a while. While not always successful we do try to keep the old tires out of landfills.

Well, the Energy Savers are on the car. With additional fees, replacement certificates, taxes, etc. minus the trade-in of $20 per tire it was $540 out the door. We do have a $100 VISA card coming as part of the promotion so the bottom line is actually going to be $440.

I'll be able to give them a good test on Friday. I have to run out across the desert again at highway speeds. We'll see how the gas mileage compares.

They're going to have to pry these Michelins from my cold , dead car. I filled up last night before taking a friend to Bullhead City, AZ, Topped it off over there and drove home. 70 mph all the way with the a/c on going but not coming back due to longer uphills on return trip. Besides, I was alone and.I don't mind a little warm (low 80s) in the car.

Last weekend it was 38.7 mpg on the old tires. Last night's trip on the new Energy Savers? 50.15 mpg round trip!

Bridgestone Ecopia EP422+ or Michelin Premier A/S? Bridgestone likely has the edge on LRR; the Michelin might lag slightly, for mpg, but better overall considering handling/grip.

That's not the right size, though it may be what is on the car now.

You'll want to switch to 195/65/16 to keep the speedometer closer to accurate and keep the MPG up.

You can consider 205/65/16 to improve handling at the cost of MPG.

Either way you shouldn't put more 195/55/16 tires on the car.

This is a Touring with all the factory options. I won't change tire sizes from factory OEM as the results on actual MPG are not scientifically tested for this car.

Greetings all. While shopping for new tires for my 2006 today (185/65-15) my quote from Les Schwab lists a $7 per tire "Tire Pressure Monitoring System Rebuild Kit." Any idea what that might be? I assume there's a battery in the tire monitors. How long are those supposed to last? Having those working has saved me some heartache a couple of times now, so I would like to keep them healthy. Not so happy about doing things just because somebody lists it on the invoice.

    5-10 years.

Besides places that are trying to stick you will try and sell you new sensors with the battery built in for $60 a piece instead of rebuilding them. $7 sounds like a deal if it's a 2006 with the oem TPMS.

I've had Bridgestone Ecopia 422+ installed for the last week. Road noise is low, mpg is too early to tell, cornering is ok but I think it's more of the Prius suspension than the tires. Got these installed for $340 at Costco. Michelin might handle better but costs significantly more.

I also had Bridgestone Ecopia EP422+ installed a few days ago. I was coming from some old Yokohama AVID's and it is night and day difference on tire noise, change in ride feel, and I have noticed a few more mpg also but haven't even gone 200 miles on them yet so its not conclusive.
P.S. I got mine from Costco for $357.xx out the door. They Have the $70 instant rebate right now.

Does a standard TMPS rebuild kit include a fresh sending battery or just a new 0-ring seal? I didn't think they replaced the batteries every tire change but maybe I am mistaken there.

I don't believe the battery is replaceable. And they're for sure not doing that for $8. I believe they replace some O-ring. I'd be inclined to waive the service, just tell them to leave the TPMS alone. Knowing most tire shops, they'll try to draw you into a debate, or even lecture you on your suicidal tendencies, lol.

A few responders here said they've been through two or three sets of replacement tires, never touched the TPMS, everything fine:

Are the valves and TPMS one unit? | PriusChat

In Canada TPMS is not mandatory, yet. I'm thinking to run them 'till they quit, then just get conventional valves the next time.

If they aren't swapping the battery i'd skip it. You can replace the battery but it requires surgery on the TPMS brick and if they aren't doing that you might as well wait and get a new unit when the first dies.

Have to purchase 4 tires. What to get in 215 45 17.

Toyota dealership is having a special. They don't carry the favorites like the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 plus.

    My options are

    Yokohama Avid Envigor (87W- 45k)
    Or
    Michelin Primacy MXM4 (87V- 55k)

Price difference for a set of 4 us about $185.

Any opinions? Worth to spend the extra money on the Michelins?

For me, COSTCO's price for four tires (the Ecopia) is cheaper than Toyota's "special".
