I have a 2004 with just over 250000 miles. Shes been a great car with minor issues. In the last month, I have seen the check engine light (mil) come on twice, but it goes away after a day or so after checking the gas cap and oil levels (both were right after a fill up). Yesterday, it happened again while I was driving. This tank is over half used...

Going to take it in for a checkup, but does anyone have an idea what I may be looking at?

    Thanks

The catalytic converter may need replacement. That will be a relatively costly repair in California, well into four-digits, since aftermarket cc are not certified for use in CA.

If you prefer not to guess, have the DTC read so that you will have a clue about what is wrong. Get Mini VCI if you wish to be self-sufficient in that area.

if you're lucky, it could be a bad gas cap or oxygen sensor problem.
