My understanding was the 87139-YZZ10 is a carbon filter and the 87139-YZZ08 is the cheaper non-carbon one? I have a filter from NAPA in the car now and it looks more like the YZZ08 I bought a couple of days ago. I think my car came with a YZZ10 but I threw it away so I'm not sure.

That might be it. 87139-YZZ10 has a MSRP of $35 on toyotapartscheap.com , consistent with what is listed for the identical replacement filter that stream got. I'm going to go ahead and order one to confirm. Thanks!

I wonder how many dealers are putting in the much cheaper filter instead of the more expensive one at 30K service?

Probably 95% of them, and charging for the more expensive one.

i just purchased the cabin filter for my 10 prius...i put it in, but am not sure it is right... I thought the slots would fit crosswise, but it won't go in, so i installed it with the slots going straight in.... Any feedback on this?

This is correct. The filter "lines" or pleats will be like this

    not like

    -----
----- when you put it in. It's not the most tight fit, but it works. Maybe show a picture so I can better understand.

I have a question - should cabin filter be covered under warranty?

No, they are normal consumables like tires, oil, engine air filters, oil filters, etc.

If one out and out failed early in it's life, like fell apart, or had an obvious factory defect before it's expected service life was up, you might have case.

I just went to the Toyota parts warehouse today to get an engine air filter and stuff to do an oil change. The part number for the engine air filter has changed old P/N: 17801-37020 new P/N: is 17801-37021.

Does the cabin air filter need to be replaced every 16,000 km? I live in Canada where the oil change frequencies are every 8,000 km and my maintenance menu says to replace the cabin air filter every 16K with a cost of $52 each time...
What is the approximate price to purchase one from the parts department?

Buy the MANN filters from Rock Auto for $7. Exact same thing. Those cabin air filters are the biggest joke I've seen ever from a car dealer.

I just blew the dust off ours at 15,000 km (time interval governed), and re-installed it. It wasn't too bad: a little dirty, one or two bugs, but didn't look any where near clogged. I think next time around (say at 30,000~32,000 kms) I'd replace it.

I just put my electric leaf blower on high speed and run the filter past it a few times. Works like a charm...
