Do all G1's have the NAV buttons in the dash?

I didn't think our 2002 had NAV, but the buttons are there on the dash. Do all G1's have the buttons for it (I think it was map and desitination)? If I push the buttons, it just says the external device is not installed.

My 2002 does have the navigation system. Evidently it was a pretty rare option on the 2002s (not a lot built with the nav system). The one I bought is one of only about four 2002s I saw with navigation (out of probably 150) when I searched the entire US on autotracker looking for mine.

With what Toyota was charging for NAV systems, it's not surprising that few people bought it, especially from 2001-2003 when the technology was newer.

One could always open the dash, disconnect the useless wires, and 'reassign' the lower two momentary contact switches to some other purposes.

I thought of making a toggle for the added 110 vac inverter. But I did not want such general access to that switch so I stuck it down by driver's left knee.

Add-ons to the display subsystem (including navigation, satellite radio, and CD/DVD player, etcetera) are just that: add-ons to the basic display subsystem.

The basic subsystem occupies the top portion of the whole, with the LCD display on the front. The add-ons are bolted underneath in one or two levels (the CD/DVD player is in a separate compartment in the dash).

Cables from the add-on(s) are brought to the top, where their function is enabled.

    This is still true today.

On a Gen 1, the indication that the add-on function is not present is by the simple message "External System Not Connected".

I get message this on my 2001 as it has none of those systems (the CD/DVD compartment is empty, and an empty tray is installed in its stead, and which is perfectly sized for storing, say, a Garmin or competitive GPS unit, out of sight.
