Greetings: Just purchased a new 2015 Prius Three that might have a problem that I don't know how to do a search on the site.
It seem to have excessive play in the drive shafts or something else. During driving the car and taking my foot off the gas and then giving it some gas again - there is a gap before it seems to connects again. It seems to have excessive play in the shafts? Also, this can be duplicated by moving the car back and forth (by hand) when the car is parked (on level ground). The car will move back and forth about 3 inches.
Can someone tell me if their car does this also or what this might be that causes this? Normal???? It's driving me crazy! My first oil change is not due til May.
Thanks in advance for your input.

3 in seem ok. There is a freeplay in transaxle locking mechanism. As for a delay when driving.... if you don't hear a CLUNK noise when you push pedal, it should be Ok in terms of transmission freeplay. I would recommend somebody familiar with Gen 3 Prius drive your car. Or you drive another Gen 3 Prius and compare the behavior.

There's the word I was trying to think of "freeplay". Thank you for that Alekska! It doesn't make any sound, just worried that it might be a problem that might get worse with more miles. I only have about 1500 miles on it now and was going to ask the service people about it when I take it in for my first oil change. I wonder if there is some adjustment that can be made to lessen this?

Also Bisco - what does "afu" stand for? Does your Prius do the same thing?

Thanks both of you for replying. Can't wait to hear other comments that might have the same issue.

yes it does. because the prius isn't a 'normal' transmission, it has more free play than what you're used to.
snafu is a military term, all fouled up.

I don't think anything can be adjusted....
It's a good idea to let service advisor know about your concern. Let them drive the car. It has full warranty and should be fixed If anything is wrong

UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! --- SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING SELLING MY NEW 2015 PRIUS

Well I took the Prius in for its first service check and asked about the "free play" in the driveshaft as stated above. I was told that this is normal and nothing could be done about it!! After just getting back from a 9 hour trip, I think I have decided that I Hate,Hate this backlash that I'm experiencing. Every time I had to slow down and speed up again, I feel that free play in the drive line. I don't think I can keep this car because of this. I might get a second opinion from another dealer, or just believe my dealer that nothing can be done and get a Honda. Anybody have this and just live with it??
    Thanks
    Kevin

You can try test driving another 2015 to see if it has the hesitation. You can also use the PWR button to see if it tightens up the response time.

For me, the hesitation is there but not annoyingly so. Perhaps this is remnant of drive by wire throttle? I don't know. I got used the absolutely awful turbo spool up on my Subaru WRX. The hesitation on that can last up to 2 seconds.

MMModen - I have tried all 3 modes. The power mode is the worst of the three. The ECO has the least amount, but it still bothers me. I drive in the Normal mode almost all the time.
Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.

Bisco - no I haven't driven another new/used Prius to check, but, I did go over to my neighbors to see if his car moves back and forth while in park. And yes it does, but, that doesn't necessarily mean that this is the norm. He is older than me (I'm 61) and probably doesn't notice it. I do, and it bothers mean.

    That's "Situation normal, all ... "

All automotive Park systems and drivelines have some backlash. If the Prius has a little more than average, that isn't likely to do you any harm.
