We dont have any ev/hv lines in my neighborhood, you say the car stalled right in the middle of the street? I check my pulse often, its only 55.

A real problem with the Pip is one really does not have total control of either Ev or Hv/Ev. The car will go into either HvEv / or Ev when circumstances warrant. The driver does not have total control. I am not complaining I never get less than 50 mpg, Most of the time its infinite and trips of 8-10 miles often reward with 100 to 259 mpg. 50 to 85 mpg are a total failure for me. But, Ill live with it............

Finally drove the PiP again yesterday. Estimated EV miles was actually only at 14.4, completely normal.

Thanks for the lesson guys, I now understand the error in my math and logic. I would like to amend my statement above to read, "On the way up we averaged 37 mpg . On the way down we averaged 150 mpg :D. That is an average of 60 mpg!" I think I can do better than that. I think I can average about 40mpg on the way up and come back totally on EV using no fuel, so that could get me closer to 80mpg, once I get more adept at P&G and better use of regen. I will say we have had the PIP for a little over a month and according to the HSI we are averaging right at 70mpg during that period, which includes around town, some freeway miles at 65/70 mph 150 miles round trip, and weekly trips up and down that mountain. I think I can do better than that once I become better at gaming the system.

    >38-40 MPG in my experience at highway speeds, in Hold mode only, (the only accurate way to get this data).
    >>Close enough to EPA rating. =Happy enough. Didn't burn much gas. Didn't stop at the QT for months at a time.
    >>>Have routinely seen EV costs of $0.025 per mile driving the country way to work, up to $0.04 to .05 per mile winter, with heater on at highway speeds,(Fully Functional EV) = More than happy.
The number that really matters is $/mile.

The point I'm trying to make is: Why show a MPG figure when you use more than 'Gallons' to roll down the road and ignore the cost of the other energy source?
PHEV owners seem to do that...

Well let's see... it cost about $0.50 to charge my battery. Amortized over 300 miles, that added $0.00167/mile. At a sixth of a cent per mile, I can see why it often gets "ignored" :).

agree with mpg as a misnomer. quantifying in dollars is useless as well, since some pay more than others. better to convert ev miles to mpg and add together, imo.

Yes, unless you generate your own power through solar panels, which more and more of us PHEV owners are doing.

but there is still a cost, unless someone gives them to you.

    I don't follow what you are saying. $0.50 / ~11 EV miles = 4.5 cents per mile.

Well yes, solar power from the sun is a free resource. We purchased our solar panels to power our house. The PIP came later. Since we were overproducing, we can plug in the PIP at no additional energy cost. We will amortize the initial cost of the solar panels over a 7 year period through non-existent energy bills. So over a 20+ year lifespan, I can justify the purchase the same as "free."

or you can divide your total cost by total production over 20 years for a kWh cost.

Indeed. I was just showing what the difference was in this particular case.

With our PIP, a full charge equals anywhere from 1/4 to 1.0 gallon of gas depending on how we drive the car on that charge. We usually use two to three full charges a day.

I'd say that is a good estimation. I pay 25 cents to charge the Prius, or about 2 cents per mile. At current rates it costs about 6 cents per mile on gas, so electric is roughly 1/3 as expensive here in the NW.

...and the United States of America does have its own Vancouver, right on the Columbia river looking across at Portland Oregon. Oregon also has its own city of Detroit. It has a population of 209 citizens, yet has 6 Tesla super chargers. They must be the loneliest chargers in the world.

i am now paying 90 cents to charge up, a year ago it was 50 cents. this state is messed up. but i heard on npr tonite that energy prices will be increasing under the new obama plan, but we will have the option of decreasing our bill through conservation and more efficient appliances.
