I want to leave my Prius running and be able to lock my doors while I go into a store for a few minutes.

How do I program it to be able to leave the Prius running and lock the doors while motor is running?

don't think you can do this.

You can use the driver/passenger door lock to lock the doors - I think you would have to use the remote to unlock the doors

Try this with the driver/passenger windows open - so you do not lock yourself out.

Use the mechanical key to lock the driver door.

This makes no sense. No rational person, in any vehicle, leaves a vehicle running. This is 2013, not 1940. The Prius was designed in part for conservation and efficiency, not wasteful idling.

If you are just hopping out to grab something then just hop out, the key doesn`t have to be in there. Also keep in mind that a vehicle that is on (READY in the Prius` case) with no driver is illegal in most countries and in the US, many states.

What SteveLee said is what the OP needs to know. However if the OP does this, the OP also needs to be aware that anyone could break a window, then open the door and drive off with the Prius. The Prius will continue to run until it is either powered down or runs out of gas without a keyfob IF the Prius is in "Ready Mode".

To make a long story short, the Gen II with SKS system can be locked and unlocked with the mechanical key from outside while the Prius is in "Ready Mode". It would need to be understood that the keyfob would NOT be in the dash, but rather in their pocket or purse. Also, if one locks with the mechanical key while in "Ready Mode", they will also have to unlock it with the mechanical key as the buttons on the keyfob will be temporarily disabled.

There are some valid reasons for doing this, one being if you have a dog or pet in the car with you.

Another way that I have read to do this:

Leave driver window down when you get out,
Reach through the window and lock doors,
Hit Auto Up window button and remove arm quickly.

It has been my understanding that the life of the HID headlight bulbs is adversely affected by cycling them on and off, perhaps more than run time for short intervals. I've often wanted to leave everything on to avoid a 3 to 5 minute shutdown. I believe that the term "wasteful idling" does not apply in this situation.

"Wasteful idling" also does not apply to the Prius in the same way it does to conventional automobiles since it cycles on and off as needed. Since it self-determines when it needs to idle up and their was a purpose to leave it on, it may best be referred to as "Smart Idle".

If the car is already warmed up and if the driver leaves the car for only a few minutes, then shutting the car down (and turning it back on later) is more wasteful than leaving the car idle, due to the fuel burned during the S1 warm up stage.

I came here looking for an answer for what I consider a pretty good reason to want to leave my prius running, but locked. On occasion I pick up my granddaughter at daycare, and I have to park and go into a building, check her out, etc, and that takes about ten minutes, and in hundred degree heat, the car can heat up quickly. I would love to be able to leave it locked and running so when I come out carrying a 20, 9 month old baby and her diaper bag, I don't have to worry about my car being hot and uncomfortable right off the bat. That seems like a fairly sane and justifiable reason to me!

You can take your small metal key out from the key fob (2008 model) and make a generic Toyota key at Home Depot (or similar store). Use that key to manually lock/open the car while the engine is running

Or you can simply use the little key in the keyfob, but I hate that little thing....

Just curious: were you formerly "ski.dive"? That's a 2 year plus comeback, lol.

Anyway, roll the windows down, shut it down. Leaving an AC-running, idling, pumping-out-the-heat, unattended car is selfish, resource wasting, and usually illegal.

I use this feature in the winter when it's cold and were below zero in a function I turn the temperature down to 65 have the heater on all the other electronics are off and lock the door with the mechanical key it will run for an hour and a half or two hours only using a miniscule amount of gas it works the same way with AC on. That is one of the little known benefits of a Prius. It's also great for. Camping.
I also have insurance if stolen!ยก
I don't want to hear about wasting gas, I save enough when I'm driving it it really doesn't matter!!!

Obviously you don't have pets; I actually lock the door manually before I get out if I need to grab something real quick from 711 and leave the car running and air.
